I've been trying for several hours to get SQL Server Management Studio Express 2008 to install on my 32-bit Vista Home Premium machine with no success. I've tried installing using both Web Platform Installer and the installer for SQL Server Management Studio Express 2008 here: http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyID=7522a683-4cb2-454e-b908-e805e9bd4e28&DisplayLang=en
In both cases, the install fails with code 1625 telling me that "This installation is forbidden by system policy." (I've pasted the full log file below.) I have been unable to find a way to get past this error.
Note also that after the installation fails, there are SQL Server 2008 items in my Programs list under Control Panel. I've tried to uninstall/reinstall, but when I try to uninstall I get either an error telling me there is nothing to remove, or the uninstall appears to succeed but it still appears as an installed program in the Programs list.
Any ideas what I should do to get this to work? I already have SQL Server Express 2005 on my PC and I'd like to access it using Managment Studio 2008.
