SQL Server Management Studio Express fails to Install

I've been trying for several hours to get SQL Server Management Studio Express 2008 to install on my 32-bit Vista Home Premium machine with no success. I've tried installing using both Web Platform Installer and the installer for SQL Server Management Studio Express 2008 here: http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyID=7522a683-4cb2-454e-b908-e805e9bd4e28&DisplayLang=en In both cases, the install fails with code 1625 telling me that "This installation is forbidden by system policy." (I've pasted the full log file below.) I have been unable to find a way to get past this error. Note also that after the installation fails, there are SQL Server 2008 items in my Programs list under Control Panel. I've tried to uninstall/reinstall, but when I try to uninstall I get either an error telling me there is nothing to remove, or the uninstall appears to succeed but it still appears as an installed program in the Programs list. Any ideas what I should do to get this to work? I already have SQL Server Express 2005 on my PC and I'd like to access it using Managment Studio 2008. Re: SQL Server Management Studio Express fails to Install

Can you please check your Security Policy to see if you are blocked from installing this msi. Go to Administrative Tools --> Local Security Policy and check Software Restriction Policies in Enforcement node if the restriction policy exists.

    Thanks,

Re: SQL Server Management Studio Express fails to Install

I've tried to do this before, but I'm running Vista Home Premium and apparently the Local Security Policy item is not available in this version of windows. Some forum posts I've read suggest that it's possible to do the check/changes manually using regedit, but I haven't been able to find any articles or help on how do do this.

    Any ideas?

I should also note that we have successfully installed the same software setup on other 32-bit Vista Home systems with no issues.

    Thanks for any help!

Re: SQL Server Management Studio Express fails to Install

I was finally able to get it working! It seems that there was an issue with my SQL Server CE 3.5 installation. When I uninstalled SQL CE and then ran the SQL Server Management Studio 2008 Express installer, everything went happily. SQL Server CE 3.5 seems to have reinstalled successfully as well.
