    cannot create new app pool

    hi all

got my IIS7 cluster running using shared config all is well, well sort of! I have about 200 sites running and it is working a treat, however I am not able to add any new sites/app pools.

If I use the UI to create a app pool manually it remains stopped, and shows as a unknown state.

If i try and start it i get the pop-up: there was an error performing this operation.

details: the object identifier does not represent a valid object. (exception from hresult: 0x800710D8)

Anyone have ideas on how to resolve this? I have not tried a reboot as I was hoping there was a 'real' issue we can look into. There are also no event in the evt log....

    thanks

Re: cannot create new app pool

I have some further updates below:

Today I removed a single server from the shared config.

I was able to create a site and app pool on this server.

I then copied the local application config file to the shared dir to find that the new site and app pool were visible on the other servers, but the same issue still exists that the app pool will not start and remains in the unknown state.

Anyone got any ideas what issues my cluster is facing?

    Hi,

We do not support directly copy application config files. Have you perform the Export Configuration task on the Shared Configuration’s Actions panel ?

    hmmmm, I think I have a problem now.....LOL

I found this article _http://blogs.iis.net/webtopics/archive/2009/03/15/caution-while-xcopying-iis-7-0-config-files.aspx as it described my error. As per the article I got as far as exporting the 2 files, but as I have a shared config I was not 100% certain how to import so I did not proceed further.

Now since your blog I have taken this server out of the shared config and if I try return it to the shared config I get the following error: EXPORT OF CONFIGURATION FILES FAILED.

So I guess something is now corrupted? Do I need to go to the extreme measures of blowing away my shared config and recreate it, or can it be repaired?

    thanks

    Hi Leo,

Thanks for your replies and responses.

The issue was indeed the corrupt session state keys in the applicationhost.config.

By exporting the key and importing it to the config was able to resolve the issues.

I am now able to modify and edit app pools/vdirs/web apps etc not use non-built in accounts.

    Regards
