  Powershell/Mgmt Studio Express won't install on XP Pro Reply Contact  I can install SQL Server 2008 Express itself, but I can't get the management tools to install on XP Pro. I tried again after reading through (skimming) your log. I also had a failure installing the 'Windows Power Shell' therefore skipped the Management Studio install. My first attempt at installing these things was successful for 'Windows Power Shell'  so maybe that should be un-installed before attempting a re-install? But don't take my word for it, I don't know what I'm doing! I'm on XP Home on an old slow machine, 1.5GHz with 256K RAM - hope I can get something working one day. I'm able to connect from SQL Server 2005 Management Studio Express to the SQL Server 2005 Server. But I'm not able to even install the SQL Server 2008 Management Studio Express, and the SQL Server 2005 Management Studio Express won't even try to connect to the SQL Server 2008 Server. This is very frustrating! ->AlanM

It turned out Windows Powershell was already installed - once I uninstalled it I was able to install Management Studio Express 2008 without any problems. Hope that helps someone else!

As mentioned above remember to tick the 'Show Updates' box in Add/Remove programs or you wont even see that you already have Powershell installed.

BUT The uninstall of Powershell told me that 6 other pgms may not run correctly. The list (in the order given) is 1) Silverlight 3 Tools for Visual Web Developer Express. 2) Silverlight 3 SDK. 3) SQL Server 2008 Setup Support Files. 4) Silverlight. 5) ASP.NET MVC 1.0. 6) Update for MS Visual Web Developer 2008 Express Edition. The fact that Powershell has been reinstalled may mean these things work properly, but if I have problems, I guess I need to reinstall those as well.

I had 45 other programs (most of them security updates, but also including a number of regular programs) which it says may have dependencies on PowerShell. After installation, I still have the same PowerShell 1.0 installed. ->AlanM
