    Installer also hangs

I'm am trying to use Web Platform Installer but am having a problem with it hanging.   It just continues to say "Please wait while we load the latest Web Platform products."

Sound familiar? That's because I am also having the problem. I also cannot start the Performance Logs and Alerts service. I get the message "The Performance Logs and Alerts service on Local Computer started and then stopped. Some services stop automatically if they have no work to do, for example, The Performance Logs and Alert service." huh?!

I think it would be really short-sighted if they built an installer on a service that is, by default, set to Manual startup and then cannot simply be started.

I have no errors in my Event logs either.

So where do I go from here?

    Re: Installer also hangs

    Hi  rlpeacock

The  issue we know of with Performance counters does not occur because of a dependency failure on this  service but just  a failure to read counters. As you note this is an on demand service to the stopping and starting is normal.  We have seen issues where sometimes we dont see Perf related errors logged  so there is still  a possibility this is related to perf errors.

If you are running Vista or later you can try running "lodctr /r" from a elevated command prompt (Run As Administrator) .   If running XP then  KB300956 can be used however since you see no errors I dont think we can do anything with that since we dont know what counters to rebuild.

If either Lodctr does not work or your one XP and we dont have identifiable counters then the only other option I know of to isolate this is to gather a memory dump of the process and debug.  If the above does not help let us know and I will forward the debug instructions.

    Thanks Richard

PS :   While this does not help you now this problem will be fixed in the release version.
