Error - Unable to connect to Server (IIS)

Just trying to see is anyone has seen this issue previously, and has a fix. I am wanting to install sharepoint on a Vista Home Premium (SP1) machine, but each time I try to use my IIS manager to connect, i get an error message. Anyway, here is the issue am getting. In IIS manager, each time I try to connect to the server, I get this error "Unable to connect to server ____, The target server does not have FTP installed, and you cannot manage an IIS 7.0 Web server by using IIS (6.0) Manager" ...However, when I open windows features to enable FTP, I find that there is no FTP item under Internet Information Services option. How can I get this option in, or how can resolve this issue overall? I would appreciate any ideas that can help to resolve this issue...thanks.

    Try this

    Open "Computer"
    right-click on a blank area
    select "Add a Network Location"
and use the wizard to create a ftp connection.
After you log on to this connection, drag your files to it.

If this doesn't do it, you might have to install FTP from Windows Components (maybe from the disk)

    Hi,

"Unable to connect to server ____, The target server does not have FTP installed, and you cannot manage an IIS 7.0 Web server by using IIS (6.0) Manager"

It seems you have installed the IIS 6 Management Console and used the old IIS6.0 Manager. You can run "inetmgr" open the new IIS7.0 Manger. It has connected to your local machine by default.

If I remember correctly, only Vista Business / Ultimate come with the FTP componet, you are out of luck with home premium... Though you can try the out of band ftp package... click on download tab in this website and search for it.

I have this same issue, yet I have IIS 7 and 6(compatibility only which is what I can only install) on Server 2008.

I have not found an it seems as though you have installed a certain IIS 6 Manager.

IIS 6 is only for compatibility, or is there a simpler way?

if you are on w2k8, why not just download the out of band at iis.net? this will use the new IIS 7 Manager.

do not get me wrong, but didn't a already say I am not interested in FTP?

Basically there is no need for IIS 6.0 compatibility

http://www.iis.net/extensions/IISManager is what you need to connect to your IIS7 server from a vista machine.

Are you talking about the ability to administer from outside the domain?

I do all administration within the domain.

no. I do not know how that would help, when again, I do all administration work in the domain, not outside the domain. Everything is fine now.

It is really stupid to have an IIS 6.0 manager compatibility, yet not have the ability to use it other than FTP and SMTP

Well, that's the catch. the old IIS 6 MMC based manager is meant for administrating ftp and smtp. With new ftp component, you can use the new UI, but smtp piece still belong to exchange group, I know this is not a good deal, that's why I skip smtp component :)
