Configure Windows Server 2008 SMTP with IIS 6.0

I am trying to configure the SMTP server ... after seeking advise form a local expert, I am told that In Windows Server 2008, SMTP services can only be configured and managed using the Internet Information Services (IIS) 6.0 Manager Console. Basically, when you try to add SMTP Services, the prerequisites are IIS 7.0 AND the IIS 6.0 Management Compatibility group's two role services entitled IIS 6.0 Metabase and IIS 6.0 Management Console, which are automatically installed. You then need to use the IIS 6.0 management console to configure SMTP.

It seems hard to believe that I'd have to use IIS 6  ... can someone confirm what I'm being told is true?  thanks

SMTP is not managed by the IIS team, but by the exchange team.  The built-in SMTP server feature is the same one from w2k3, it runs in iisadmin and uses the IIS 6 management MMC.
