    Problems installing IIS

I am trying to install IIS. It does not work through control panel and so I have tried by typing the commands in at the command prompt. I have seen various variations of what to type in and have tried loads including full version to scaled down versions. The last error message I got was '14098' is not recognized as an internal or external command, operable program or batch file. I am running Vista Ultimate and SP1 (and am very new to all this) so if anyone can help in very simple terms it would be great.

    Thanks

    Re: Problems installing IIS

    Hi

I've been to this site and followed instruction for installation via control panel - which didn't work.

I then tried typing in script at command prompt and when i tried %errorlevel% it came up with   '-2146498548' is not recognized as an internal or external command, operable program or batch file.

I noticed that the instruction stated I should be logged in as Web Server Administrator, is this different to just being logged in as Administrator? if so how do I do this?

Is there anything else I can try?

    Thanks for any help

I have the same problem. MS should get rid of this bug in vista.

    Re: Problems installing IIS

Couple of things to try here:

    1. If you are running the pkgmgr.exe command to install IIS (in non UI mode), you should start the command prompt in elevated mode. To do this, type "cmd" without quotes in the search box under start menu, right click on the only search result and click "Run as administrator". If this fails, please reply back with the exact command used to install IIS along with %windir%\iis7.log.

    2. If you are getting failure while installing IIS via control panel UI, please send the contents of %windir%\iis7.log. You will need to run command prompt in elevated mode to access this file.

    Re: Problems installing IIS

I have been crawling all over this problem for a week now. Followed all of the instructions found on the net, both Programs and Features and through the cmd prompt, elevated permissions, run the Windows Update System Readiness Tool (KB947821), yada, yada, yada. Ad nauseum. Based on search engine hits, there seem to be more than a few people having this problem without reaching resolution, esp w/ Vista 64. My environment is Vista 64 Ultimate, AMD dual-core chip, 4gb RAM (HP Pavilion DV7 notebook).

I REALLY, REALLY need this to work so I can perform ASP.NET development on this machine.

The install continues to fail time after time after time after time and it really doesn't give any hints as to why or any breadcrumbs (like "IIS7.log"? Not there. Nowhere to be found.). The ONLY thing I have been able to dig up after running the 'start /w pkgmgr ....' install method covered elsewhere, it leaves behind 57mb of cbs.log entries. Digging through that, searching for "error", I see a lot of references to ERROR_FILE_NOT FOUND that appear to be non-fatal. Then, I see the following dump of arcane blather, which looks like a smoking gun. But I'm incompetent to interpret the entries. It looks like everything after that is toasted, though. This is occurring in the first "start /w pkgmgr ..." command (elevated to Administrator) detailed in the cmd-line IIS install.

    Here's the error line:
