Re: Smooth Streaming RTW Feedback Thread

We are currently looking for a way to distribute audio only, is it possible to use Smooth Streaming technology. We would like to have the same ability to use different sound quality delivered to our customers depending on their current available bandwidth.

Is this possible in the current version, if not will it be supported?

We currently have a large music archive all in full WMA Loss Less and all originating from original CDs. It would be a very nice feature to be able to deliver full quality audio to our customers.

Hey, tried to install IIS Smooth Streaming Beta 64 after installing the 2.0 RTW on a perfectly new fresh installed windows server 2008 64 bit:

    1. Using download and install:
A newer version of this product is either already installed or available for installation
on this computer. Installation of IIS Smooth Streaming - Beta cannot continue. To install the newwer
version of this product, use Add/Remove Programs on the Control Panel to update IIS Media Services.

    2. install this using the Web Platform Installer 2.0 Beta: I get
"Product 'IIS Media Services 2.0' is incompatible with product 'IIS Media Services 3.0'

Keivan - This is certainly possible with the server, but multi-bitrate audio support is not included in the client implementation or (to the best of my knowledge) with the commercially available encoders. What are you using to encode your content today?

I'd be glad to reach out to the compression community and see what thoughts they have on how best to encode for this scenario.

Re: Smooth Streaming RTW Feedback Thread

    Andreas -

    1) The Media Services 2.0 RTW includes an RTW version of Smooth Streaming. Since the Smooth Streaming Beta is an earlier version, it does not install on a machine with 2.0 RTW by design. Please verify that that Smooth Streaming functionality (On-Demand) works as expected with 2.0 RTW and you should not need to install anything else.

    2) We'll go take a look... In the meantime, can you confirm whether you can work around the issue by installing Live Smooth Streaming and Advanced Logging directly after 2.0 RTW is installed? The direct links are available from the extension pages.

    Live Smooth Streaming 1.0 - Beta x86 / x64

    Advanced Logging 1.0 - Beta x86 / x64

    Thanks,

Hey John, here are the results:

Live Smooth Streaming 1.0 Beta x64: "A newer version of this product is either already installed or available for installation on this computer. Installation of IIS Live Smooth Streaming - Beta cannot continue. To install the newer version of this product, use Add/Remove Programs on the Control Panel to update IIS Media Services."

Advanced Logging 1.0 Beta x64: Installed OK.

Re: Smooth Streaming RTW Feedback Thread

    Thanks, Andreas,

Both #1 and #2 are by design.  There was a configuration change between the Smooth Streaming 2.0 RTW and 3.0 Beta releases that required that we block them from installing side-by-side.

If you just want to test, especially with Live Smooth Streaming, then please just keep your existing IIS Media Services 3.0 Beta installation.  If you want to go into production with IIS Smooth Streaming, please uninstall the IIS Media Services 3.0 Beta features (IIS Bit Rate Throttling, IIS Web Playlists, IIS Smooth Streaming, and IIS Live Smooth Streaming) via Control Panel / Programs and Features, and then install IIS Media Services 2.0 using either method 1 or 2.

Hope this helps.  If this fundamentally blocks you in some way, please let us know.
