Localhost OK, but website not avail from Internet

My website has been working well for about 2 years, Vista Ultimate SP1, IIS 7.  Suddenly a week ago it stopped.  If I type in localhost from the server it loads the website.  But if I try to visit the site from my laptop (all PCs are on the same router) then it doesn't load.  I shut off the firewall (Norton 360 v 2) and bypassed the DNS servers, confirmed with my ISP that they are not blocking anything, they did PING and TRACEROUTE (all OK) to my IP:  96.51.156.232 .  So if you try to get to my IP address (www.bluelagoonislands.com) you should be getting my index.htm for the default website (C:\inetpub/wwwroot\ ).  I have gone thru Control Panel, opened Computer Mgmnt, SERVICES, ensured that WAS and IIS were running--tried to RESTART the default web site in the IIS Manager.  I have gone through my Linksys router settings carefully as this is where I suspected the problem, but can't find it.  (All other internet functions work, Limewire, etc.).  A week ago I installed I-TUNES with BONJOUR ... which has some known issues with VPN, and although this is approx when my problem started, I uninstalled those programs.  I even used Norton Ghost to retemplate my machine PRIOR to having installed I-TUNES/BONJOUR, so I tried to rule out a Port 80 conflict.  One last thing I noticed during some checking in IIS:  under the TEST CONNECTION button, I found this:  ***  The server is configured to use pass-through authentication with a built-in account
to access the specified physical path. However, IIS Manager cannot verify whether the
built-in account has access. Make sure that the application pool identity has Read
access to the physical path. ***  But I'm not sure how to resolve that (if that is indeed the problem).  Now then...after all this info, can anyone help me, let me know what I have forgotten to check?  Thanks, Vincent

What happens?? What is the error that you get?? A lot depends on what sort of an error you get

Re: Localhost OK, but website not avail from Internet

The only error I guest is a time-out error "the site is taking too long to reply" kind of an error in the Firefox browser.  From the local machine, if I type in localhost, the website comes up.  But even if I type in my own IP address, it gives me:

    ***********************************************************************

    Network Timeout

The server at 96.51.156.232 is taking too long to respond.

The requested site did not respond to a connection request and the browser has stopped waiting for a reply.

        * Could the server be experiencing high demand or a temporary outage?  Try again later.
        * Are you unable to browse other sites? Check the computer's network connection.
        * Is your computer or network protected by a firewall or proxy?  Incorrect settings can interfere with Web browsing.
        * Still having trouble? Consult your network administrator or Internet provider for assistance.

    ***********************************************************************

I have had this error a year or two ago, and found a resolve somewhere in the router I believe but can't find it now.

Does that give you any more clues?  thanks, Vincent

    a few points on basics:

    - When a page in requested in a browser. the request is sent from the browser to the requested server (I am skipping the details)

    - The webserver then responds depending upon the settings of the website. Different scenario's with respect to the various authentication schemes.. so on and so forth... once this is done IIS will log the request in it's log file appropriately.

    - Depending upon the response recieved from the server the browser acts. If it recieves the page then it displays it or else it simply asks you for more input (like in case of Basic Authentication, login windows comes up)

However, I highly doubt if in your case the process is even reaching the 2nd step. Just to confirm you can check the IIS log files corresponding to site in question if it logs any movement. You might want to check your network settings once again...

Re: Localhost OK, but website not avail from Internet

Correct.  The log files, which I do check regulary, show no activity since March 30.  So the browser requests aren't even reaching the server.  So does this look like the problem is NOT with IIS and rather likely to be firewall or router?  But if I complete disable the firewall (both Windows and Norton 360) that should isolate the culprit to the Linksys router, correct?  But I just can't find the problem within my router settings.  Problem is that I don't have enough vocabulary within all these technical things (much less proper understanding of them).  Any further suggestions?

About the router configuration I may not be of much help. :)

Re: Localhost OK, but website not avail from Internet

No problem, I do thank you for your time, interest, help.  I figured out the problem.  NOW I am going to make notes and document it. I will summarise the problem here, hoping that it might be of help to someone else if they fall into a similar situation.  LINKSYS WRT300N.  I run 2 desktops and 3 laptops in the house (one is a Mac, everything else is Vista).  Occasionally, 1 of the 2 desktops loses its internet connection from the router, and my wife's Vista HP Vista laptop also can lose the internet connection.  Curiously, my own HP Vista laptop nor the Macbook never lose it!  Anyway, I sometime reboot the router (sometimes also the cable modem). The router then reassigns the internal IP address to each of the computers.  The main big desktop that I use for web server usually carries an internal IP of 192.168.1.100 ... but today I found that this address was assigned to my HP Vista laptop, and the web server desktop was given 192.168.102  ... so I logged into my router page (http://192.168.1.1 ) and then click on the BASIC SETUP tab to view the assigned internal IP addresses for each machine.  Then knowing what my desktop web server IP is, I went to the APPLICATIONS & GAMING tab (of the router webpage) and this arrives under the sub-tab SINGLE PORT FORWARDING.  There I have 3 applications listed:  http, tftp, ftp ... these are then assigned to point to the same IP address:  192.168.1.102    The problem is that when the router re-assigns a new internal IP to my desktop web server, it does not know to automatically go to this screen and change the IP from 192.168.1.100 to 192.168.1.102   ... so there we have it.  Such a simple problem, logical, but was so hard to find.  I had to comb through every screen of the router web pages until I got it.

    Tieuphi2006,

I am not sure as to how your problem is related to the current situation... if IIS is not running properly on VISTA SP1 ... you might want to search again on the forums here or on your fav search engine ... if you dont find anything then open up a new thread ...

This problem was more related to router config or the user...
