  Continuous reboots while installing SQL Server Mgt Studio Express Reply Contact So today I decided to try the Web Platform Installer 2.0 Beta, and I told it to install everything.  I didn't have any of the web platform stuff installed before this; we've been an exclusively Linux shop, and I was trying to broaden my horizons a little. The computer in question runs WinXP SP3, is fully patched, is regularly tested for spyware and viruses, has truckloads of disk space, and 4 gigs of RAM.  It had no versions of IIS, SQL Server, or anything else related to the Microsoft web platform installed before this.  It did have the .NET runtimes installed (1.1, 2.0, 3.0, and 3.5), but that's it. The install was going reasonably well until it got to the part about installing SQL Server 2008 Management Studio Express.  I get to the point where it says, "SQL Server 2008 Management Studio Express requires a reboot to finish."  So I click yes, and it reboots...  and I log in...  and then the installer pops up and tries to install SQL Server 2008 Management Studio Express all over again, showing the same exact dialog at the end.  It never gets past this stage.  We're on ten reboots and counting for SQL Server 2008 Management Studio Express. Does anybody have any explanation as to why this is happening, or should I just assume that the "beta" in the web platform installer really means "broken," and uninstall the stuff it's added to this machine and try the Web Platform Installer 1.0 instead?

  Re: Continuous reboots while installing SQL Server Mgt Studio Express Reply Contact  Hi Inker, The logs are present under %SystemDrive%\Documents and settings\%user%\Local Settings\Application Data\Microsoft\Web Platform Installer\ ( On an xp box, %localappdata% doesnt map to this folder. webpi.preferences file is under a different folder - %SystemDrive%\Documents and settings\%user%\Application Data\Microsoft\Web Platform Installer\ ) Coming back to your problem, providing the logs would help us understand the issue you are facing. Thanks.

  Re: Continuous reboots while installing SQL Server Mgt Studio Express Reply Contact Hi Inker; Thanks for reporting this issue, which we have never seen before.  Could you send your log files from: %temp%\sqlsetup.log and all logs under “%programfiles%\Microsoft SQL Server\100\Setup Bootstrap\Log” to webpi@microsoft.com.  This looks to be a SQL return code that we are not handling properly.  By sending us your logs, I can work with the SQL Express team to investigate further what might be causing this. It looks like for some bizarre reason the SQL Express installer is trying to install itself on the wrong drive:  It somehow found an old unused beta copy of Vista (beta2, I think; it's ancient) sitting in a partition that is long overdue for being reformatted, and it seems to think *that* is the actual installation of Windows instead of the WinXP installation in the first partition of the first hard drive that's actually the *running* installation of Windows; and the installer seems to die shortly after arriving at that conclusion. You must restart this computer before installing SQL This occurs because of the presence of this registry key  which points to a pending file rename  operation for a Wireshark Network driver. HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Control\Session Manager   Name:            PendingFileRenameOperations   Type:            REG_MULTI_SZ   Data:            \??\C:\WINDOWS\system32\WOEM_3_2awoem.tmp    Possible Resolutions1. Reboot the server and see if this key is removed. In normal circumstances this should be removed after reboot.2.  Backup the registry. Given that these installation failures have been going on for two weeks now, and are still going on even after you guys have upgraded WPI to a new version, I'm really not convinced of the overall quality level of the "Microsoft Web Platform."  I not only could but have set up Linux+Apache server farms in less time than it's taking to do a single installation of this mess.

Installing the management studio manually for an existing instance did not work. Below are the Steps that I used to install management studio: 1) go to control panel and uninstall existing instance of SQL Server 2008 2) run %localapps%\Microsoft\Web Platform Installer\installers\SQLManagementStudio_x64_ENU.exe 3) restart 4) run web platform installer, instalation will fail, but it stops trying to install the stuff all over again 5) run SQL Server 2008 installation (if you captured the package from WebInstaller, fine, if not you have to download it yourself, 83MB) go to installation -> new sql server and follow the wizard Hope this helps, Adam

I have just attempted the Web Platform 2.0 Beta installation, to have it continuously rebooting my Vista Ultimate x64 box with the same message "SQL Server Express 2008 requires a reboot to finish" over and over again.

  Re: Continuous reboots while installing SQL Server Mgt Studio Express Reply Contact In my case, it was the Logitech Process Monitor that was causing the problem; the LPM is a stupid little program that comes with some Logitech webcams and tries to inject itself into nearly every process it finds so that it can do silly effects on the picture (warps, filters, and other pointless sparkly things) if the process tries to use the webcam. If it's installed, you can find the Logitech Process Monitor buried in your Services; you'll have to set it to "Disabled" to get the Web Platform Installer 2.0 to work. That said, WPI2 still doesn't quite fully work here; it still fails when trying to install SQL Management Server Express, but at least it no longer insists on infinite reboots.  But I've been busy enough with my job and home life that I frankly don't care that SQLMSE doesn't work; after wasting a week's worth of evenings on this whole thing, I chalked it up to "broken beyond repair" and haven't bothered to try to go any farther with it.  MySQL ran perfectly out-of-the-box when I installed it, and it's sufficing for my needs:  Sorry, Microsoft, but "it just works" beats weeks worth of "still not working, send us the logfile" hands-down.

This is checked by the SQL installer  to determine if there is another installation pending completion and will trigger a reboot  anytime and entry is present. See Kb 312995.  http://support.microsoft.com/kb/312995 In addtion to the Logitech service we have found another that repeatedly adds and entry  HP WMI  Interface Service ??\C:\Program Files\HPQ\Shared\hpqwmi.events http://forums13.itrc.hp.com/service/forums/bizsupport/questionanswer.do?admit=109447627+1241793012442+28353475&threadId=994336 From within Webpi  platform we cannot directly change the behavior of the SQL installers however we  will  look to see if there are options on how we can handle this when the SQL installation is selected.
