  nypmphion Joined on 02-03-2009, 4:20 PM Posts 7	xp pro iis 5.1 asks for uname and password Reply Contact  Hello, Im new to IIS.  Any help is appreciated.  Just installed IIS 5.1.  When I type in http://localhost a box pops up requesting name and password.  This is all being performed on a stand alone machine.  Any ideas as to what to do?  thanks

  Re: xp pro iis 5.1 asks for uname and password Reply Contact  Tom, thanks for the help.  IIS shows that it is allowing anonymous authentication on the site.  How do I know if IUSR_mycomputername has NTFS Read permissions on C:\inetpub\wwwroot? Went to the  C:\inetpub\wwwroot folder->Properties but there wasnt a tab for permissions.  Only options for using wizards to create network security connections.

  Re: xp pro iis 5.1 asks for uname and password Reply Contact  Thanks again.  With your help I have now set read permissions for IUSR_mycomputer on the C:\inetpub\wwwroot folder.  I still get the uname and psword request box for http://localhost.  A few more items that might help.  This is a clean install of xp pro so I'm sure that there are no bugs (using McAfree and Spybot).  Again, I know Im a novice so this must seem crazy to you.  Any help is appreciated. I now get an error page with the following: HTTP 403.1 Forbidden: Execute Access Forbidden Internet Information Services Technical Information (for support personnel) Background: You have attempted to execute a CGI, ISAPI, or other executable program from a directory that does not allow programs to be executed.

  Re: xp pro iis 5.1 asks for uname and password Reply Contact Tom, Thanks for all your help with this project.  I'm also taking an html class and need to get some work done for my client site before tonight so I think I'll break off the IIS thing for a while now. I tried this before about 6 weeks ago and stopped after banging my head against the wall for 4 days.  My thought then was that if I reistalled my OS clean I'd fix some underlying problem. Anyway, if you have more thoughts I'm open to hearing them. The code suggested that one or more directories did not have the correct permissions. (CGI, ISAPI, or other executable program from a directory) I could'nt figure out where to find those directories. Went into the MMC and included IUSR_mycomputer with read permissions in as many folders as seemed to be possibly connected with this issue, all to no avail. You are very generous with your time and knowledge. Thanks again, Marc

The script mapping for the file type that you are trying to execute is not set up to recognize the verb that you are using (for example, GET or POST). To verify this, right-click the directory in Microsoft Management Console, click Properties, click the Directory tab, click Configuration, and verify that the script mapping for the appropriate file type is set up to allow the verb that you are using.
