Installing IIS 7 on Windows Vista 64bit

Hi, I ran through the normal default installation procedure to set up IIS 7, yet it isn't working yet. The normal procedure is laid out well here: http://learn.iis.net/themes/iis/pages/page.aspx/28/installing-iis-70-on-windows-vista/ I did the above (on a new Vista 64-bit), but I don't get the welcome screen. I went to the Internet Information Services (IIS) Manager in the Control Panel and it appears to show that the web server is up and running. But in fact it isn't. When I go to http://localhost, I get a message: "Internet Explorer cannot display the webpage." When I type in the localhost name I thought it would be, I get a message: "the address is not valid" and the URL changes to "http:///". In the IIS Manager, I clicked the link under "Browse Web Site", and still the same problem. Any clues?

Re: Installing IIS 7 on Windows Vista 64bit

     Hi Bernard, thanks for answering.

I don't recall seeing any errors during installation.  I can open the IIS Manager successfully. I can't get to the default website (i.e., the welcome page).

I checked c:\windows\iis7.log and there was a huge list of commands and components installed, launched successfully.  However, at the very end, there are three items that perhaps are valid errors.  Here is one of them: (the other two are almost identical)

IIS 7.0 Component Based Set Up

    "C:\windows\WinSxS\amd64_microsoft-windows-iis-sharedlibraries_31bf[...etc...]\iissetup.exe" /launch_uninstall c:\windows\system32\regsvr32.exe /s /u c:\windows\system32\inetsrv\inetmgr.dll

    Launching command c:\windows\system32\regsvr32.exe, with params c:\windows\system32\regsvr32.exe /s /u c:\windows\system32\inetsrv\inetmgr.dll

    Ignoring acceptable LaunchCommand failure 0x80070003

    Success!

Does this give you any clues?

Certainly not on my iis7.log. so I would suggest you remove and install IIS again.
and make sure you got sp1 installed as well.

Prior to sp1, I got into many issues with the setup engine and unable to get IIS installed properly.

Re: Installing IIS 7 on Windows Vista 64bit

Thanks.  I did this.  I checked the iis7.log again and there are no errors, everything was successful.

I opened IE7, typed http://localhost and no site yet.

I then went to the IIS Manager, double-clicked my computer name in the "Connections" left window, then Sites, then when I went to click on "Default Web Site" I got a pop up error:

    "Sites

There was an error while performing this operation.

    Details:

Object reference not set to an instance of an object."

At this time, there were also no icons in the "Default Web Site Home" window area. After I pressed okay, all of the icons appear and the site right "Manage Web Site" window appears to indicate that the web server is running.  I clicked the link under "Browse Web Site", it opens IE7 to http://localhost, yet still get: "Internet Explorer cannot display the webpage."

No what?  It's like its working but not working, so close yet so far.

    MMm... frus isn't it.
Looks like the installation is not complete either. Are you on Vista SP1, if not I really recommend you get it on.

If you already got it, try one more time>
    - uninstall iis
    - delete \inetpub\ inetsrv folder
    - uninstall WAS
    - reboot

    - reinstall IIS, it will prompt your for WAS
    - re test.

Re: Installing IIS 7 on Windows Vista 64bit

     Frustrating??? Don't get me going.

I have Vista SP1 installed already.

Just to clarify: I uninstall by going into Control panel>Programs>Turn Windows features on or off, then unclick Internet Information Services, let it do its thing, then reboot, right?

    Then delete:

    c:\inetpub\ and

    c:\windows\system32\inetsrv

I don't know what WAS is or where it is ...sorry, can you clarify?

Then reboot and reinstall by turning IIS back on in the "Turn Windows features on or off" panel.

    Right?

Re: Installing IIS 7 on Windows Vista 64bit

Okay, I tried uninstalling WAS, IIS, deleting inetpub and inetsrv (as suggested above).  Still hopeless.

I feel like I am not the only one with this problem.

I never had a problem setting up IIS in Windows XP, it was the easiest thing in the world.  Now this is beginning to cost me more time than I can afford.

I suspect the error has to do with security permissions. When I got to IIS Manager, then to my default site, "Basic Settings">"Test Settings", there is an Authentication error.  The details for the error state (in part): "The server is configured to use pass-through authentication with a built-in account to access the specified physical path. ..."

I am now going back into "Turn Windows features on and off" and selecting the other items under IIS>Security.

    Suggestions? Clues?

Re: Installing IIS 7 on Windows Vista 64bit

I got IIS 7 to work, to some degree.  Right now I can access my site via my IP address,i.e., http://***.**.**.**.

I can't get to my site either via http://localhost or through the Host Name.

    Why would that be?

    Hi,

Please run "ping localhost/hostname" in the command prompt, see what IP address is returned. Then test if you can view your page via the returned IP address.

Re: Installing IIS 7 on Windows Vista 64bit

    Hi Leo,

Thanks for answering! Very much appreciate any help I can get.

The site does work with the IP address, but not under "localhost" or host name. Oddly, ping didn't return an IP address (I guess I have more to learn from Vista yet.)

I got "Reply from ::1: time <1ms" four times.

    IPCONFIG worked well.

How do I change the IP address to have a host name or get the "localhost" to work?

so what do you get when you browse 127.0.0.1 ?
the ::1: ip is for IPv6 format.

Re: Installing IIS 7 on Windows Vista 64bit

    Hi,

Yes, the "::1" is an IP address using IPv6 format. Windows Vista system enabled IPv6 support by default. You can use the IPv6 address to view your page like this "Http://[::1]". This is equal to "Http://localhost". You should browsing 127.0.0.1 to determine that this issue is caused by IPv6 or some other things.

Also, I'd suggest you run WFetch to narrow down the root cause. "WFetch allows you to fully customize an HTTP request and send it to a Web server so that you can see the raw HTTP request and response data".

WFetch is a tool in the IIS6.0  Resource Kit Tools. But iIt also can be used to troubleshoot HTTP Connections issue via IIS7.0. You can get it from here:

    IIS 6.0 Resource Kit Tools

Re: Installing IIS 7 on Windows Vista 64bit

    Hi Leo,

Good news and bad news.  Bad news first: I can't get to http://localhost, http://[::1] or http://172.0.0.1.

But, whatever, because the good news is that I found and set in the "hosts" file in c:\windows\system32\drivers\etc\, my IP address and my desired hostname and now my hostname shows up as the website.  Like whodathunk it?  I am sure this may seem silly to some, but I didn't know I was supposed to do that.  Secondly, I went back to IIS Manager and changed the "site binding" from my IP address to my hostname and now IIS Manager also resolves to my domain (as I want).  So, I have figured that much out!  Hallelujeh!

I am downloading WFetch now.  I obviously have more to learn in general and will look into this further.  Thanks.

Mm.. is 127... not 172. and by default those entries should be in your host file.
