IIS 7 on Virtual Machine in Server 2008 question

    Hi Guys,

So I have IIS 7 setup on a virtual machine running Windows Server 2008 and the laptop running the virtual machine is running Windows Vista.  My question is shouldn't I be able to access the IIS server to view a website on Vista?  Obviously I can see the website running on "localhost" in the virtual machine, but I want to access it outside the VM.  I have a server 2003/IIS 6 VM setup where I am able to do this.

Any thoughts on what I might do to get this to work?

    Thanks!

    1) make sure there is a network connection (aka a ip address). Can you access stuff from the VM out?  If so, then probably a local firewall (which is enabled by default) is blocking port 80.

Yes, you should be able to browse remotely to your VM.

Thank you for the response. Yes I am able to browse the internet on the VM.  So are you saying I need to disable a setting on the VM in server 2008 itself?  How is this done?

    Thanks for your help.

It's the local firewall that comes with windows.   You can get to the windows firewall UI in the control panel.

    Or

Windows firewall could be blocking the port.  You can either turn it off temporarily or run 'netsh firewall set portopening TCP 80 "HTTP Port' from the command prompt.  Note: The netsh command requires elevated command prompt.
