    Unexplained crashes

    We have a IIS 7 server running a few websites (ASP.NET site and WCF IIS hosted services).

     Periodically we get the following error in event log:

    Faulting application w3wp.exe, version 7.0.6001.18000, time stamp 0x47919ed8, faulting module iiscore.dll, version 7.0.6001.22135, time stamp 0x47d8a503, exception code 0xc0000005, fault offset 0x000000000001413d, process id 0x1028, application start time 0x01c94eaa6e8b32c4.

     This always proceeds all the application pools crashing, with the following stack traces:

     From the WCF worker process:
    Exception: System.AccessViolationException: Attempted to read or write protected memory. This is often an indication that other memory is corrupt.
    at System.Web.Hosting.UnsafeIISMethods.MgdEmitSimpleTrace(IntPtr pRequestContext, Int32 type, String eventData)
    at System.Web.Hosting.IIS7WorkerRequest.RaiseTraceEvent(IntegratedTraceType traceType, String eventData)
    at System.Diagnostics.TraceSource.TraceData(TraceEventType eventType, Int32 id, Object data)
    at System.ServiceModel.Diagnostics.DiagnosticTrace.TraceEvent(TraceEventType type, TraceCode code, String description, TraceRecord trace, Exception exception, Object source)

    at System.ServiceModel.Diagnostics.ServiceModelActivity.TraceMilestone(TraceEventType type)
    at System.ServiceModel.Diagnostics.ServiceModelActivity.Dispose()
    at System.ServiceModel.Activation.HostedHttpTransportManager.HttpContextReceived(HostedHttpRequestAsyncResult result)
    at System.ServiceModel.Activation.HostedHttpRequestAsyncResult.BeginRequest()
    at System.ServiceModel.Activation.HostedHttpRequestAsyncResult.OnBeginRequest(Object state)
    at System.ServiceModel.PartialTrustHelpers.PartialTrustInvoke(ContextCallback callback, Object state)

    at System.ServiceModel.Channels.IOThreadScheduler.CriticalHelper.WorkItem.Invoke()
    at System.ServiceModel.Channels.IOThreadScheduler.CriticalHelper.ProcessCallbacks()
    at System.ServiceModel.Channels.IOThreadScheduler.CriticalHelper.CompletionCallback(Object state)

    at System.Threading._IOCompletionCallback.PerformIOCompletionCallback(UInt32 errorCode, UInt32 numBytes, NativeOverlapped* pOVERLAP

    And from the regular worker processes:

    Exception: System.AccessViolationException
    Message: Attempted to read or write protected memory. This is often an indication that other memory is corrupt.
    StackTrace: at System.Web.Hosting.UnsafeIISMethods.MgdSetStatusW(IntPtr pRequestContext, Int32 dwStatusCode, Int32 dwSubStatusCode, String pszReason, String pszErrorDescription, Boolean fTrySkipCustomErrors)
    at System.Web.Hosting.IIS7WorkerRequest.SendStatus(Int32 statusCode, Int32 subStatusCode, String statusDescription)
    at System.Web.HttpResponse.UpdateNativeResponse(Boolean sendHeaders)
    at System.Web.HttpRuntime.FinishRequestNotification(IIS7WorkerRequest wr, HttpContext context, RequestNotificationStatus& status)
    at System.Web.HttpRuntime.ProcessRequestNotificationPrivate(IIS7WorkerRequest wr, HttpContext context)
    at System.Web.Hosting.PipelineRuntime.ProcessRequestNotificationHelper(IntPtr managedHttpContext, IntPtr nativeRequestContext, IntPtr moduleData, Int32 flags)
    at System.Web.Hosting.PipelineRuntime.ProcessRequestNotification(IntPtr managedHttpContext, IntPtr nativeRequestContext, IntPtr moduleData, Int32 flags)

    And:
    Exception: System.AccessViolationException
    Message: Attempted to read or write protected memory. This is often an indication that other memory is corrupt.
    StackTrace: at System.Web.Hosting.UnsafeIISMethods.MgdIndicateCompletion(IntPtr pHandler, RequestNotificationStatus& notificationStatus)
    at System.Web.Hosting.PipelineRuntime.ProcessRequestNotificationHelper(IntPtr managedHttpContext, IntPtr nativeRequestContext, IntPtr moduleData, Int32 flags)
    at System.Web.Hosting.PipelineRuntime.ProcessRequestNotification(IntPtr managedHttpContext, IntPtr nativeRequestContext, IntPtr moduleData, Int32 flags)

    Any ideas anyone?

     Thanks,

    Nic

    I would suggest contacting microsoft product support, they can help you collect crash dumps and analyze them - the forums are really not a suitable place to try to do that.
