    FTP virtual directory access problem

I hope some knows something about this.

I have a Win2k3 file server running IIS 6.0. Users need to access this server with FTP so I have created an FTP site.  I have created half a dozen Virtual Directories on this site that are mapped to various folders on this machine.  All of the virtual directories are working fine except for one. I have quadriple checked that all six virtual directories are setup exactly the same way. The NTFS permissions (on the non-working directory) allow Domain Users full control and the owner is Administrators just like all the others. The one notable difference is that this one virtual directory is rather large; 330GB in size. I don’t know if its size may be a factor or not.

When I try to access this share from within our network with ftp using Windows Explorer,

I get a login prompt and then eventually the following error:

FTP Folder Error – An error occurred opening that folder on the FTP Server.  Make sure you have permission to access that folder.  Details: The operation timed out.

On the server, the following event is logged:

Source: MSFTPSVC          Event ID: 10        Description: User <username> at host 192.168.0.229 has timed-out after 120 seconds of inactivity.

If anyone has any ideas, I would much appreciate any input.  Thanks.

Re: FTP virtual directory access problem

Well I still don't know why this is happening but I noticed that if I open IE and uncheck the "Use Passive FTP (for firewall and DSL modem compatibility)" under advanced internet options, everything works.  I can access all of the drives through ftp.

    Hmmm.

I would still need to know why this happened.  I don't know if it makes a diff. but the OS is Win2k3 64 bit version.

    Cheers.

as the size of virtual folder is 330GB that means it contain 330GB data and hence it seems that it is taking too much time to list all the files/folders present under it in your FTP client which results in to time out.

Instead of using IE to FTP your web site I would suggest you to use any FTP client like CuteFtp, WSFtp etc. which are some of the best FTP programms. These ftp clients allow you to continue a upload/download process which was broken due to connectivity issue, it continue the operation after establishing the connection once again
