FTP Connection closes right after it is opened

I have a clean install of Server 2008 Web Edition.  I tried to set up FTP but was having connection issues.  I discovered FTP7 so I uninstalled FTP6 Publishing services and have install FTP7 publishing services as per the direction on this site.  I was still having connection issues.  Thinking that it may be a firewall issue, I decided to follow the steps outlined in the following article http://learn.iis.net/page.aspx/301/creating-a-new-ftp-site/  and use the local host 127.0.0.1. address as well as anonymous login for testing purposes .  I even followed the article that has you add FTP publishing services to the default Web Site.  I am having no luck and am at my wits end.

If I use ftp.exe to connect to the local host, I receive the following:

Microsoft Windows [Version 6.0.6001]Copyright (c) 2006 Microsoft Corporation.  All rights reserved. C:\Users\Administrator>ftp localhost
    Connected to ComputerName.DomainName.lan.
    Connection closed by remote host.
    C:\Users\Administrator>

It appears that I can connect, but as soon as the connection is opened, it is automatically closed. I have even disabled windows firewall to see if that would help, and it did not.

    Anyone have any ideas?

Re: FTP Connection closes right after it is opened

    Update and follow up question.

When setting up the server the first time around, I added it as a member server to my SBS2003 Domain. In reading many posts trying to figure this issue out, I read that configuring may be different for FTP and IIS in a Domain environment, Vs a workgroup.

Seeing that I really did not have anything on the server of importance, and no need to have it part of the domain, as it will be in a VLAN setup as a DMZ, I reinstalled the OS from scratch. I created the server in its own workgroup and did not install FTP6 after installing the Web Server Roll. Instead, I installed FTP7 directly after the basic server config.

When setting up my FTP site, I am still getting the same connection issues. I can access the website via theWAN just fine, but cannot maintain a local FTP connection.

If I launch Server Manager, and navigate to Roles, then scroll down to Role Services, should it show that FTP publishing service is installed? It currently does not even though I have installed FTP7.

Re: FTP Connection closes right after it is opened

    OK all is working.

I cannot really say what the problem was as I did not do anything different.  I just kept on deleting the ftp site and recreating it using the tutorial mentioned above, and then it just started working.  I still get the connection closed message using the command prompt, but I can now connect locally using windows explorer both anonymously and with basic authentication, and it is working perfectly.  Now I just need to try and open the site to the WAN.
