Creating a working public facing website with IIS7

Hi! I am completely new to IIS, and have spent the last couple of weeks reading up on IIS7, and trying to make a public facing website with IIS7 on my Server 08 enterprise server.  At this point, i have successfully installed IIS, and the web server related roles, i have also installed php, and fastcgi.

I have read articles, and watched video tutorials on how to create a site within IIS (specifically, there was a video i found on this website that showed how to create a site, the guy doing the video made one "burton.com" in the video). I followed along with everything the guy in this video did (however i used my own html files obviously) and could not achieve the same results that he received- ie a working site- i can access the default site at http://localhost.  There was one point in the video that i was dumbstruck, after createing the site in IIS, and setting it up there, he opened his browser and said something to the effect of "made dns entries..." and he was able to punch in www.burton.com in his browser and get to the site he had just made.

What am i missing here? I am trying to become a web host, and actually have a number of clients essentially waiting for me to get to where i can host myself- i really dont want to go towards a unix system w/ apache.

It seems to me that i'm missing some all important steps related to DNS entries, or setting up a nameserver even?

Could anyone point out to me what i may be missing here? Thanks!

    Hello,

You should buy a domain name - yoursite.com from some domain registers, by example - godaddy.com. After that to login in the domain control panel and change the DNS records to point the domain name to your IP address and port.

    Regards

Thanks for the response.  I will certainly do that with my personal website, in attempt to get it working.

Should I not be able to see the site locally before trying to get it public though? At present, I have been unable to create the site within IIS, and then access it through IE, on the server. I can access http://localhost, and it is my understanding through articles i have read that when you create the site within IIS, you should be able to view it locally via it's address.  If this is incorrect then i apologize.
