HTTPS avi files won't play in windows media player via IIS7

    Hello,

I have a few avi files I put in an https virtual directory on the server.   If I download those files from the server using FTP - I can play them back in windows media player 11 without any issue whatsoever.   If I connect to them via https - e.g. https://www.mycompany.com/client/acme/sample.avi - I get an error - which points me here and yet as I said my computer has no problem playing any of the avi files locally - only when I put them up on the server. http://www.microsoft.com/windows/windowsmedia/player/webhelp/default.aspx?&mpver=11.0.5721.5145&id=C00D11B1&contextid=87&originalid=80004005

I can playback WMV files with windows media player 11 that are being downloaded from the same virtual directory on that server.    I can also playback quicktime movies (not with windows media player) from that same folder.

I don't know if it matters or not but I can't play asf files with wmp 11 from that same folder although when I download them to my machine they play fine.   I'm not concerned about asf files but thought it might help you in diagnosing the issue.

Could you provide us more information:

     1) Are you using any of the Media Pack modules such as Bit Rate Throttling?

     2) Could you try requesting the url directly from inside Windows Media Player?

    Thanks.

    Hello,

I have not installed Bit rate throttling - will it help?

2 yes - you can play the url directly by opening it through windows media player.   The issue is we want to be able to send links directly to the file.   We have a somewhat similar issue with IIS7 and links to https WMV files - if you send a https link to them, they get play fine but you get prompted once for the file in IE and then a second time once WMP opens.

    1) No.  Just for information that might help locate the issue.

    2) I am not sure what you mean.  Did you mean you can play the video if you enter the complete url for example https://mysite.com/video1.avi into Windows Media Player via the menu File -> Open Url, but you cannot if you open the html link from Internet Explorer?

    Hello,

To clarify - I can open AVI files with divx encoding but not other AVI files when attempting to play them from http://www.mycompany.com/file/video.avi - I can't open the url from media player and play it that way either.   However if I just ftp the file down from that same location it plays just fine on my PC - so I haven't changed the format.

If I click on the  error I get this - http://www.microsoft.com/windows/windowsmedia/player/webhelp/default.aspx?&mpver=11.0.5721.5145&id=C00D11B1&contextid=87&originalid=80004005   However I have tried on a laptop, I get the same issue, I called a friend in texas - he gets the same error - would be a heck of a coincidence that all of us have sound cards that work great normally but just not on different avi files I have on my site and all other movies on the site play fine through windows media player just the avi's don't.

Are you trying to play it with Windows Media Player 11? On Vista or XP?

Can you share the URL to your AVI files?

    Thanks,

I'm trying on XP - it is hard to find anyone who uses vista to test our site so we don't really worry about if vista works.

If you PM me, I'll send you a link.

I tried the URL you sent me. I played it on both XP and Vista with Windows Media Player 11 and observed no problem. Given that you're able to play it back locally, I think you must already have Divx MPEG-4 codec (as needed by this file) installed on your machine. So mostly likely it's some networking issue on your client machine. Can you check if you have the right proxy setting in your Windows Media Player? Are you able to play other media files (WMV or MOV) using https URL from the same directory? Please make sure you clean your browser cache (temp internet file) before you do your test.

Interesting - everyone else both inside our company and out couldn't open it.

I've cleared my cache, can't open it.  I don't have any proxy settings and I can play WMV and MOV files from that same directory.   I've put a few different WMV files up there and they all fail on clients computers although they can all play them locally.

Another thing you can do is to check your server log and see whether your client's requests actually reached the server. You can use a special user/pwd to filter out your specific request.

Thanks - they are reaching the server - this seems to be the general issue -

    But no solution.

This is strange since you're able to play it back normally if you download it first. I assume both audio and video work fine in that case. I found this which may be helpful:

You can probably try Windows Media Player related forums and see if they can help. It doesn't seem to be a server-side issue.

Thanks - I've found a lot of articles about this - it seems to straddle both worlds - most common respsonse is use another player - works great.   I have the absolutely latest version of Windows Media player I can't say for sure what all the other people who tested with had and I can't say what sound card they had but after seeing a lot of posts about this issue on the web - it does seem like there is an issue to be resolved - for all I know it is a creative labs/MS issue with media player.

Thanks for testing the file.   I found the issue.   Creative labs sound drivers that were released about 6 months ago (and perhaps previous versions) were the source of the issue.   I just updated to the ones that were released within the last month and the issue goes away.   Odd that you could play the file locally - just not when using a URL.
