    The disapearing website?!?!

Well this is the strangest thing that I have ever seen.

    Platform:
    Windows server 2008 standard running:
        - IIS7
        - Routing & Remote access (NAT and VPN)
        - AD DS
        - DHCP
        - File Server
        - Database (MySQL)
This server is the only server on the network and hosts 5 clients.

    Content:
I am hosting PHP pages via FastCGI. I have PHP install and functining correctly. I have Pear installed and functining correctly. All bindings are set up correctly. all website content is working when viewed from the server.

    DNS & Routing:
DNS is handled thru DynDns and is correctly setup. (tracert checked and varifyed)
Ports are open and fowarded to the correct internal IP for the server.

    Problem:
Can not access the website from client computer w/in the LAN. However, the website that the domain is named after can be access w/out problem from inside and outside the LAN... it seemes that any other websites that that are outside of the servers AD Forest can not be access from within the LAN.

Need some help with this one!

    Clareafacation:

When i say Can not be accessed i mean that IE displays "the page cannot be displayed" Error. i have noticed that on the botom of the browser that the website has been found and that it is trying to open it however it seemes that it times out and that the website can not be displayed.

     Thanks for any help...

That's an error generated by IE.  Look at the event logs and the IIS logs on the server to see what may be happening.  Enable failed request tracing and look at the log.

    Re: The disapearing website?!?!

I've enabled the failed request logging on the IIS server and the Dir does not have a single Log in it! I have yet to look in the event log; however, from the server manager (at a glance) the logs seem to have no errors within them... However, I will pull them up and have a look in them and post any details....

Do you have sugestioins how to proceed assuming that i find nothing in the event log?

    Thanks,

     Travis

    Re: The disapearing website?!?!

Looked at the Event logs and i did not find anything! however, a little good news has passed my way... i have tryed navagating to the site from outside the network from the same computers that were having issues in my first post and they were able to open all the pages in a timely manner with no lag..... however, i am still unable to navegate to the website from w/in the network... is there any reason for this...??? It has to be some kind of DNS problem i would think however, it says that it is opening it in the status bar in the browser and times out... any sugestions?

    Re: The disapearing website?!?!

It looks like connection issue. Did you ping the server?

     It is DNS/firewall/connection issues.

    Re: The disapearing website?!?!

I have no issues connecting to the server. Also, I dont have any issues navagating to any of the websites hosted by my IIS7 if i am outside of the lan.. however, if i am on a client w/in the lan i can not access any of the websites that are hosted on IIS7 that are bounded to another domain name other than the AD domain name for the server. i am at a loss

    Re: The disapearing website?!?!

You do have issues connecting to the server and the sites on it by your own admission.

Maybe you can connect to the server one way but not another. It is how you connect to teh server as well.

Run a packet sniffer on the network and server side to see if your packets are even getting to your server.

If you are getting confirmation that there are packets to the server box via the on hostheader then come back and I will give you some more suggestions. Then it will be a problem with the hhtpsys or iis layer and you should get logs for these.

If you are not getting packets to the server then it is a firewall/conection/dns issue.

    Re: The disapearing website?!?!

Thanks for the reply; well the reason for my denial is that I am accessing the server trough a remote desktop connection as the server can not be administered locally. So in terms of the ISO model layers 1 trough 3 are working at lease… I would think…  I will put a packet sniffer in the server on the internal nic and see if there is any data loss... and I will also put one on a client to see if there is a data loss there as well.... I’ll do this tonight and ill post the results....

    Re: The disapearing website?!?!

Well it looks like that the server is doing what it is supposed to:

    (Link Removed for security)

    (Link Removed for security)

There is a handshake; also I have HTTP packet data sent to the client....

Anyone have any idea as to why I get the gray background and the image placeholder for the IIS 7.0 welcome page and nothing else. Also, when I try to go to any other page in the site the request seems to time out and I get a "the page cannot be displayed" Error from IE?

Mind you this is only happing in the LAN

    Re: The disapearing website?!?!

Well I figured the problem out….. It was a DNS issue

The way I came to this conclusion is by manually crating a new forest in the DNS table on the server and manually adding the records to point to my server (Its Self). Once I had the records setup… I hoped on to a client PC on the network and navigated to the site and pow… no more problem.

My best guess as to the reason for the problem is a infant loop with my dynamic host and my server. Unfortunately, I have no proof or idea that this is infact the case… does anyone out there have any clue as to why this was a DNS problem?

    Thanks... for those that posted

     *shrug*

Does www.dnstuff.com 's dns report give any clue/potential problems.
