    HTTP:500 Internal Server Error

I am using Windows XP 2004 Media Center software.
As I understand, it is also based upon Windows XP Proffesional.

IIS was working just fine on my computer until I uninstalled a web site
that was using it. Now I cannot get my computer to see localhost. All
it say's is This page is not available when I seek localhost in the
    address bar of I.E.

I completely uninstalled it from Windows Add/Remove in Control Panel

Rebooted computer and reinstalled it.  I believe the default files are checked off.  They are

common files, IIS.Snapin, SMTP service and WWW.service.

I ran IIS6 log but as a complete novice I cannot interrupt it at all.  I am fairly new at computing and unfortunetly a lot of the technical dialog is way over my head.

I looked in C:\inetpub and I do see www.root folder.

I would very much appreciate any help I can get to be able to see IIS when I type localhost in my address bar of I.E.  I need to install a Web server but cannot use it unless IIS is working properly.  If you have any suggestions, please consider I am a novice and detailed instructions would be a great consideration for me to get this issue resolve

Any futher suggestions would really be appreciated

Thank you in advance for your assistance and consideration

yes it would be IIS 5.1 on MC 2004...

What happens when you open up IIS Manager ... also see if the IIS dependent services are running... for that

    go to start->Run -> Services.msc

now check if WWW Service, IIS admin service are in their start state ... Also give the exact error message that you get when trying any of these...

    Re: HTTP:500 Internal Server Error

I do not kn ow where IISManager is located so that I can open it.

IIS in services.msc is set on Automatic as well as www

I installed a program called Web-Link that I need to use in order to control via this software certain objects in my home while I am away from the house.

Each time I select the icon to run the program, that is when I get the error message "The Web site cannot display this page".  This is the same error message I am receiving when I try localhost in the address bar of I.E.

I did uninstall the IIS in Windows Add/Remove in Control Panel.  Rebooted the computer and then reinstalled it again.

I do see links to Web -Link in Adminstrative Tools under Internet Information Services.  When I left click it and go to Browse I get the following error message:

MMC has detected an error in a snap-in.  It is recommended that you shut down and restart MMC.  I DO NOT UNDERSTAND THIS MESSAGE OR HOW TO FOLLOW THE INSTRUCTIONS.  Prehaps you do and can advise me.

I will send you an image Via your e-mail of Internet Information SErvices in Adminstration Tools so you can see for yourself the Web-Link folder and the message next to it when I select the Browse option

If you do not understand, help yourself first, use www.google.com

    type in

    iis manager

    http://www.microsoft.com/technet/prodtechnol/WindowsServer2003/Library/IIS/b0c14479-83e3-435d-a935-819fe396e7d2.mspx?mfr=true

    It takes a seconds.

However you issue is probably with the application you installed go to them for help. Remove teh applciation completely from you machine and start again.

    Re: HTTP:500 Internal Server Error

I attempted to attach you a snap of the page but I guess because of the default settings of this  format I am unable to do so.

It shows in the title Internet Information Services

Left column Gateway-9606 (Name of Computer)

    Folder Web Sites

    When opened Folders

    IISHelp

Web-Link (is in the left side of windows)  in the right side of the opened window it shows The website cannot display the page

Seems like your program was not uninstalled properly. Pls uninstall it properly and then try localhost... If you uninstalled it before you should not be seeing any WEB_LINK name in the IIS manager...

    Re: HTTP:500 Internal Server Error

I reviewed IIS manager in Administrative Tools and there is no trace of Web-Link.

I totally removed Web-Link from the computer.

I shut off all anti virus and firewall software.

I totally uninstalled IIS from Windows Add/Remove in Control Panel

Rebooted computer and reinstalled IIS from the CD from folder i386.

I went to address bar in I.E. Typed in localhost and received the same error messasge as the subject line above.

Thank you again in advance for your assistance and consideration for my on going problem with IIS.

    go into Internet Explorer->tools->options-> Advanced

remove the check box for Show Friendly HTTP Error.

and then try to browse localhost... see if you get anything else on your page now...

Also check if there is anything in the event logs .... I need more info....

    Re: HTTP:500 Internal Server Error

I followed your above instructions.  After unchecking Show Friendly HTTP Error, and entering localhost in address bar in I.E. I got the following message:

Active server Page Error 'ASP ;0201'

Invalid default script language The default script language specified for this application is invalid

    EVENT LOGS

    Internet Explorer     None

    System                 Error Soucrce DCOM

    Security                None

    Application             Error  Source IISADMIN

Hope this is helpful and gives you sufficient information to help me find IIS when I type localhost

Thank you very much for your guidence

    Re: HTTP:500 Internal Server Error

I read the information from Qbernard regarding ASP 0201 and found it way above my head.

Do you have any other suggestions that could get me to my localhost page?

     Thank you,
