    VS2005 - Server 2003 authentication issue (perhaps)

     Hello,

I can't seem to be able to have visual studio 2005 either open or create a remote website on server 2003.

"Unable to open the Web "http://servername. You are not authorized to perform the current operation".

    Configuration:
    ==========
vs2005 64 bit is installed on a host running vista ultimate 64 bit, dual intel E5410 xeons.
Server2003 R2 Std x64 is installed as a virtual machine(vm) inside wmare workstation 5.  There is a 2nd virtual machine running xppro.

    Background:
    ==========
server 2003 has frontpage server 2002 extensions installed and asp.net 2.0.

I am able to ping  all machines from any one machine.

I am able to browse the default website on server 2003 from within as well as from xp and vista.

On vista, I am able to use the network center to read/modify/write any directory that I set the appropriate permissions for Guest, servername\iusr, users (servername\users).

vs2005 works fine with the internal development server.

    Request:
    =======

Any suggestions, simple tests, feedback would be much appreciated.  Please be explicit since I am new at this and very general input might just throw me for a loop.

(I saw a previous thread: Configuring IIS 6.0 to work remotely with Visual Studio .NET 2005, but wasn't able to understand exactly what to do).

    Thanks,
    Dev.

One more thing, I am able to see the server 2003 in the server explorer section of visual studio 2005. e.g crystal reports, event logs etc.  If for example I click on "event logs", I get "Requested registry access is not allowed" ... which leads me to think it all is an authentication issue ... perhaps.

Your user account needs to at least be a FPSE author on the root web.  It may be easier to have your account be a member of the server's local administrators group.

Re: VS2005 - Server 2003 authentication issue (perhaps)

Thanks for your prompt response.  I am encouraged that there may be a solution but would like a little clarification.

1.I login to Vista as user "foobar"
    2. On server2003 there is an account "foobar" which is a member of Administrators, and Users.

Trying to open the remote server2003 default website as "http://servername" in VS2005 results in the same error message (even though I can do so successfully from Firefox running on the host).

I also tried adding "Guest" as well as "IUSR_servername to Administrators w/o success.  Am I missing something here?

Would appreciate if you could elaborate a little on how to make my user account be a FPSE author on the root web, or exactly what that means or entails.  How can I make this happen?

Apologies again for newbie questions, but I have spent quite some time getting to this point and feel I am close.

    Thanks,
    Dev.

Do the two accounts have the same password?  Each account is actually different because they "live" on different machines.  In Visual Studio, when you attempt to connect, do you ever get prompted to login?

Re: VS2005 - Server 2003 authentication issue (perhaps)

Ok, that was the key, I changed the passwd on the host to match the passwd on the server (same username) and Soultion Explorer is able to load the default website.  ( I can't perform remote debugging yet since the server needs to be running msvsmon.exe, but I can read about that).  It's curious that this is the access model which works. (No, I never got prompted to login).

While I have your attention I'd like to ask your opinion about a couple high level issues if I might.

     I have 2 separate goals:

    1. to develop my own websites and install them on a hosting service such as godaddy.

    2. to develop MOSS web parts.

For goal 1. I was thinking of using VS2005 - server2003 + sqlserver 2005, but should I be thinking of VS2008 + server2008 + sqlserver2008 or any other combination instead?  I don't have the experience or background to decide if it's better to leverage IIS7 vs IIS6, .NET 3.0 vs .NET 2.0, at this point in time, or to stick with what's established and stable. Note that Frontpage is being deprecated.

For goal 2. I guess I will develop using Sharepoint Desinger 2007 + Sharepoint server 2007. Do you have any opinion on the most appropriate host ie server 2003, vista, server 2008?

In any event, thanks very much for taking the time to help me out.  It may seem like a trivial thing to an experienced person, but it was definitely a big deal for me.

    - Dev.

Re: VS2005 - Server 2003 authentication issue (perhaps)

    1.  In my view, choosing the most recent production versions is a no-brainer, especially VS2008, and especially if it's all new to you.  This way your doing things the most up to date way and you avoid/delay having to upgrade things down the road.

    2.  You can also use VS2008 to develop SharePoint.  It's my understanding though that in order to have all the WSS objects avaliable to you you need to be on a platform the support WSS so you can install it locally.

Re: VS2005 - Server 2003 authentication issue (perhaps)

Excellent point, thanks. One trade off is the experience level "out there" with the older versions is higher and I can leverage that experience when I run into problems. Another is that I don't want to be too ahead of the curve of the web hosting sites (eg. godaddy) and include features that they don't yet support.

But what the heck ... I had to overcome a lot of negativity (from my computer builder) when I upgraded to ultimate 64 bit, it works, so I will follow your advice.

I believe VS2008 can co-reside with VS2005, so that'll be an easy first step.
Although server 2003 supports WSS 3.0 and MOSS2007 (as does server 2008) ... I'll create another virtual machine running server 2008.  Only sql2005 is in my MSDNLD so sql2008 is not an easy choice.

FYI: apparently WSS 3.0 has been installed on Vista (e.g http://community.bamboosolutions.com/blogs/bambooteamblog/archive/2008/05/21/how-to-install-windows-sharepoint-services-3-0-sp1-on-vista-x64-x86.aspx)
but I don't have the need to go that route.

    Cheers,
    Dev.

No need to run both as VS2008 fully supports ASP.NET 2.0.

Ironically, last night server 2003 downloaded and installed whatever recent updates were available ... and it broke the vs2005 validation.  I can still browse remotely.  Do you happen to have a few checklist items that I can run through to try and get back to where I was?

Re: VS2005 - Server 2003 authentication issue (perhaps)

I added admin privileges to "user" and "_iusr" and reset the server and it's back.

I should try to remove the admin privs and only reset the server to see what happens.
