Hi
I'm in doubt about what kind of license I need... And the usage of IIS seems to multiply the license price many times (just an example: instead of $20, I would pay $280 per month).
- I want to run a Win2008 Standard Server with 5 local users (5 SAL + 5 Term. Server)
- IIS will be activated and is hosting several websites (all anonymous, no file or user access).
There are not more than 5 named users.
I'm under SPLA agreement and is told that I would need to have a CPU license just because I will activate IIS. However, my competitors only charge for the SAL (5 SAL + 5 Term. Server) with IIS activated.
If I buy a Retail license (Win2008 Standard with 5 clients) for the customer, the license cost would be saved just after a few months, this makes me wonder.. I would then rather purchase it once when it is saved in after so short usage.. Or do I need to purchase an external connector license of some sort?
I'm confused...
I found an article mention this, but it was for Win2000, this says basically that I would not need the SAL:
"So what about Client Access Licenses? You need a Client Access License for every user that you authenticate with the local SAM or Active Directory, except for the IUSR_<servername> account using anonymous authentication. To quote from http://www.microsoft.com/windows2000/server/howtobuy/pricing/model.asp, "Access to Internet sites by anonymous users does not require a CAL."
In other words, you can have five users authenticated to user accounts on your server and an unlimited number of anonymous users browsing IIS. This can all be with one web site or as many web sites as your server will manage. So, the number of CAL's is independent of the number of web sites you can host.
