    Failed Auth in IIS5.1

    I am using WinXP Pro SP2, IIS 5.1, .Net 1.1, .Net 2.0, VS 2003 , VS 2005, SQL Express 2005.

Basically I never was aware that there was anything wrong with my IIS settings untill I attempted to view a locally hosted SQL Report.

As you can probably guess (from the vast amount of postings on this subject) I was presented with the seemingly standard Logon Dialog box asking for User ID and Password (I know this is to do with a Loop Back check).  I then spent the best part of a week reading through and printing information on the subject. I also downloaded IIS Diagnostic tools - AuthDiag etc.

I have not got anywhere with all the help that is provided, which is down to my lack of experience with IIS and computer admin issues.  If anyone can suggest some alternative resources to do with system admin I would be grateful.  I feel like I need a few years experience doing system admin just to understand what I need to do that will enable me to look at a very simple SQL Report on my own system.

     Thanks

Do you mean SQL Server Reporting?  I'm not familiar with it but I'll try to help.

In the most simple terms, IIS will prompt for credentials for one of two reasons:

    1) IUSR_yourcomputername (or your already authenticated user account) does not have NTFS permissions to the content you requested.  Check the permissions for the files you requested.

    or

    2) In the IIS MMC, Anonymous access is not allowed for the folder or resource you are trying to access.  If you want to allow anonymous, make sure that is checked off.  In the IIS MMC, right-click on the reports folder, select Properties, click the DIrectory Security tab, under the Anonymous access and authentication control section click ther Edit button, make sure Anonymous access is selected.

    Re: Failed Auth in IIS5.1

Thanks Tom, sorry for the late reply but have been away from my computer for a while - thank God.

I did indeed get somewhere when I enabled Anonymous Access, I had turned it off as I had read in one of the forums / articles 'not' to allow Anonymous Access.  I have been able to get beyond the login in dialog thanks to yourself but I am having other problems with the set-up.

When I use Authentication Diagnostics there appears to be a lot of errors with my IIS settings for my User ID (which is an Admin account) but as I already said my understanding of the results is limited.  I would post the results here but I am away from the computer with the problems at the moment.

    Thanks again.
