    Windows Media Services confusion

I apologize if this isn't the right place to ask questions about Windows Media Services but I can't find another forum that is suited.

I have a WS2008 box that is running Windows media services. The management console for WMS shows the server name as MediaServer. As such I can go to any computer on the network and receive a video stream via a url of mms://mediaserver/directory/filename.wmv. This works fine and comes to me as a stream rather than a download, which is what I want.

Now I'm trying to access this same media file via the Internet. For example, if I register a domain name of mydomain.com that points to this server then I assume that the url should be mms://www.mydomain.com/directory/filename.wmv. This results in an error from Windows Media Player saying that the file cannot be found. I've also tried mms://mydomain.com/directory/filename.wmv to no avail.

Can anyone tell me why this is failing or what the url should be to access the media files?

Any help is greatly appreciated. Thank you, Herb

First guess is you didn't configure your firewall correctly, but you'll get better help starting here:

    Herb,

Did the page that Jeff pointed to help you find an answer?  Here is a direct link to an article on WMS firewall settings, in case that is useful.

    Re: Windows Media Services confusion

    Hello Chris,

My problem is resolved but it was not a firewall issue. I knew that from the beginning because ISA Server gives you the ability to monitor incoming/outgoing traffic and shows when a port or protocol is being blocked... and I could see that the RTSP traffic was clear.

In my case the issue was caused by the lack of a domain (I think). Originally I installed Windows Server 2008 as a Workgroup and setup Windows Media Server under it. But I had issues with WS2008 so I reloaded with WS2003 and set it up as a domain server prior to setting up WMS.

Now I can do exactly what I expected, which is to use the mms:\\domain name\publishing point\filename.ext URL to steam my videos.

So I don't know if the fix was the switch to WS2003 or the setup of a domain before installing WMS.

    Thanks for the follow-up.

    Herb
