    Web Playlist - Dynamic Generation

From what I can tell it shouldn't be a problem to generate a web playlist out to a file on the server and have that handled by the webplaylist.dll based upon extention.  I also see that it allows for an "optional" executable.  Does that mean I can use the asp.net executeable as well to preprocess asp.net file and pass into the webplaylist.dll or more to the point.  Is there any way currently to dynamically pass in a generated playlist on the fly.  I hate to generate a isx file to the filesystem evertime for each request in order to accomplish such a simple thing.  Is it maybe possible to pass a meta tag similar to asx generation?  Any info even if it might change would be greatful.  Thanks in advanced.

    Hi Jason

Could you please elaborate on the optional executable? What exactly are you referring to here.

In the current release CTP1 of web playlists, the only way to create a dynamic playlist is by writing an isx file and serving. however, we are releasing CTP2 very soon that will allow you to write custom providers, that can do it the way you want. We will also allow inserting dynamic entries into the playlist.

Ohh thank you for that answer!  I would've spent more hours on trying to solve the problem.   I guess I thought I might be able to pre-process by adding the aspnet_isapi.dll to the Executable (optional) box in the iis7 module mapping for PlayListHandler.   The other thought was changing the handler mapping order etc... So the answer is it just will not work until you expose an API in CTP2.  Thank You!

If I understand your last statement then it will be similar to modifying the server-side playlist server object in memory?   That would be really cool to modify a memory playlist in realtime based upon user key, especially if you could fire an event to re-read the client side instantly in response.  I'd also love to be able add/modify/delete header markers as well.   Will we still be able to use the ASP.NET State server then for load balancing (as in CTP1)?  Thanks for the clarification..I'm looking forward to CTP2.
