Windows Web Server 2008 and replication

Just to confirm my findings - is there really no way to configure any form of replication (FRS/DFS-R) in Web Edition of Server 2008? This would mean having to buy Standard Edition + external connector for web farms that use replication... :(

I'm running http://iislogs.com on web edition and the file services role isn't there, which has file replication.  You would have to look at using robocopy (aka a batch file with robocopy) or ms deploy, which I think ms deploy is the preferred scripting way or will be.

Re: Windows Web Server 2008 and replication

DFS seemed like the silver bullet to easily scale out websites to multiple front-end webservers...I can't believe Microsoft would cripple this functionality in webserver 2008...that seems like a bad move IMHO.

Yeah it is too bad DFS (file services role) isn't included in web edition.  I guess robocopy and the 3rd party market will be around.

     Good news...

    http://blogs.technet.com/filecab/archive/2008/05/14/installing-dfs-replication-on-windows-server-2008.aspx

    ServerManagerCmd -install FS-DFS-Replication

actually, you have to use this:

    OCSetup DFSR-Infrastructure-ServerEdition

Works like a charm!  If you run the servermanagercmd, the error comes up.  man this is awesome!

    C:\Users\Administrator>ServerManagerCmd -install FS-DFS-Replication
    .....
ArgumentNotValid: Invalid role, role service, or feature: 'FS-DFS-Replication'.
    The name was not found.

Re: Windows Web Server 2008 and replication

I don't understand why it would be, when it was part of Server 2003 Web Edition...and if anything MSoft has loosened the constraints on 2008...you're allowed to run SQL on it after all.

I wouldn't think so since it was published by a MS employee.

Sorry it isn't showing up in the UI guys, but yes this is supported.  Enjoy!

Re: Windows Web Server 2008 and replication

Hi Guys: I need a little more help with this. I have a windows 2003 domain with 6 webservers. The webservers had all been running 2003 R2, and I had DFS set up with all 6 and working well. There's a load-balancer in front the 6 servers.

I upgraded one server to 2008 web edition as a test. I added the server to the domain without a problem, set up a folder share, and used the info in this thread to set up DFS. Problem is, I can't add this folder as a target from the 2003 side.

If I select "new target" and try to add the 2008 server's shared folder, I get an error:

Cannot add \\serverB\sharedfolder to replication set due to the following reason: FIle Replication service not installed.

What am I missing? or is there a problem having server 2008 participate in a 2003 replication set?

Re: Windows Web Server 2008 and replication

Bill, only the DFSR is supported. FRS is not - can't istall it the way described here - which is VERY unfortunate. I have a web farm hosting web sites with over 50mln pageviews montly, I would love to migrate it to IIS 7 but a missing FRS complicates the whole process A LOT. I would have to migrate Windows Server 2003 domain controllers to 2003R2 or 2008 and all IIS6 servers running on 2003 to IIS7 - everything AT THE SAME TIME without any transition periond because DFSR is not compatible with my old 2003 environment. You guys really haven't thought it through :(

Re: Windows Web Server 2008 and replication

Migration strategies are complicated as they always seem to be from one server OS version to the next.  I wouldn't trash MS for making replication only available on web edition.  It's a blessy from my perspective.  One alternative thought would be to use UNC based content   Personally, I've not used DFS before R2, is that what you are running into with the FRS not being installed?

Re: Windows Web Server 2008 and replication

I suppose the only thing I can do is set up 2008 replication and then migrate each of LB servers one at a time...either that or go back to your (Steve's) original suggestion of robocopy.

Re: Windows Web Server 2008 and replication

What about setting up a second DFS path that points to the same spot as your w2k3 one.  For instance.

\\Example.com\WebFarm\exampleDomain.com  (This is used by w2k3)

\\Example.com\WebFarmW2k8\exampleDomain.com  (This is used by w2k8)

Both have the same folder targets and as you migrate servers from w2k3 to w2k8, replication can happen on each platform.

If you make a change on a w2k3 box, it gets replicated to the w2k3 boxes, also in your process, copy the file to a w2k8 box and it would get replicated to all w2k8 boxes.  It's a little double work, but it still allows you to use DFS and the benefits of replication.
