  http://localhost login dialog??? Reply Contact I'm new to IIS and have installed it on my computer running Windows XP Professional (after finding out that Home Edition doesn't cannot run it). When selecting it from the Control Panel, Add / Remove Windows Components I selected all the components. After installing all the various .NET updates from the Microsoft Windows Update website, when I type http://localhost into my browser I receive a Connect to PCName dialog box asking for a username and password. Stopping me from displaying the default website created by IIS. Can someone help in regards to getting around this login screen? Just so you know, I'm really new to IIS and have only been playing around with it for a week or so, so if you could be specific that would be great. Thanks.

  Re: http://localhost login dialog??? Reply Contact You got prompt either the anonymous access was not configured or the anonymous user doesn't has permission to read the page. Since this is fresh install, if you login as local administrator, by design it should works. Can you go to c:\inetpub\wwwroot\ create a hello.html with a simple hello msgs, then browse http://localhost/hello.html  to check authentication method - go to IIS Manager, right click on the web site, property - directory security tab, anonymou section, click edit, ensure anonymous access is checked. then go to windows explorer to check on permission. make sure iusr_computer name has read access. detail. BUT.. when I surfed using my computername instead of "localhost" everything went fine. I didn't get the "log in"-security dialogbox. Does anyone know why and how to fix this? Or is this yet another example of "Microsoft magic"?

After doing windows update, only 1 single website was affected by this update. It lost its anonymous permission. This was happened several times after every windows update and just always that website. Does anybody know why?

Or is this yet another example of "Microsoft magic"?   It's your browser.  IE won't pass credentials to an untrusted zone.  Your system name is trusted, localhost or the IP is not necessarily.  Add localhost to the intranet zone in your browser's security. Reply Contact   well friends here is an sol for this problem go to properties tab the directory security---> edit---> enable basic windows authentication.....     now go to inetpub folder before that go tot tool--> folder option-->view--> click on simple file sharing remove tha option then ok   now r click on inetpub prop--> security-->advanced--> click on inhert parent checkbox then dialog box will come-- click on remove now come back then click on add-->advanced--->find now--> ad iuser and admin also give them full control   finish your job  now u can access iis
