Re: i can't browse local host with VISTA Business IIS7

     <sigh>

thanks mike,   but alas,  it won't let me .  I go to "Turn Windows Features On or Off" and I navigate the tree to IIS / world wide web services / health and diagnostics,   I tick "Tracing"   the computer goes to work trying to configure that feature..   and at the end of about 3 or 4 minutes of a progressive blue bar inching across the progress window  I get "not all of the features were able to be configured" or something like that.   so It won't activate :-(

I think I'm going to try deactivating all of IIS and then reactivating it..   maybe this will solve my problems

    cheers

wow..  i'm so fed up with this.     I've un-installed, re-installed, de-activated, and re-activated just about everything that has anything to do with IIS and ASP,  I've played with mime-types and application pools - and I still can't activate "tracing" -  I get the same error each time..  for the past 3 hours..

     Error that i'm getting

i'm going nuts.. I even tried installing iis6 but of course couldn't do anything with it

I'm going to try and set up networking between my old xp-pro  box so I can test pages on this stupid crappy (but slick and shiny) vista rubbish machine  (<--note mounting frustration with 'advanced technology' )

    ok.. I panicked too soon

after one more try at deactivating and reactivating and rebooting and trying to enable tracing.. I did it.. I enabled it..

now .. this is what I got..  a whole bunch of stuff.. but of note:  one big red X  that said this:

    MODULE_SET_RESPONSE_ERROR_STATUS
    Warning
    ModuleName="IsapiModule", Notification="EXECUTE_REQUEST_HANDLER", HttpStatus="500", HttpReason="Internal Server Error", HttpSubStatus="0", ErrorCode="The operation completed successfully. (0x0)", ConfigExceptionInfo=""

    s o....   any ideas??

thanks for persevering  with me :-)

Re: i can't browse local host with VISTA Business IIS7

Interestingly enough this simple test file works fine:

     <h2>Failed Request Tracing Lab</h2><br>
    <br>Today's date is <% response.write(Date()) %>

with no problems .. so.. ..   what next...

    Lana

oh.. and one more thing:  here's my page error message (both firefox and Ie give me this:)

    Server Error

HTTP Error 500.0 - Internal Server Error

Description: The page cannot be displayed because an internal server error has occurred.

    Error Code: 0x80070005

    Notification: BeginRequest

    Module: IIS Web Core

    Requested URL: http://localhost:80/lance

    Physical Path: C:\Users\Lana\Website Design\LANCE - NEW

    Logon User: Not yet determined

    Logon Method: Not yet determined

Failed Request Tracing Log Directory: C:\inetpub\logs\FailedReqLogFiles

    Handler: Not yet determined

    Most likely causes:

    • IIS received the request; however, an internal error occurred during the processing of the request. The root cause of this error depends on which module handles the request and what was happening in the worker process when this error occurred.
    • IIS was not able to access the web.config file for the Web site or application. This can occur if the NTFS permissions are set incorrectly.
    • IIS was not able to process configuration for the Web site or application.
    • The authenticated user does not have permission to use this DLL.
    • The request is mapped to a managed handler but the .NET Extensibility Feature is not installed.

    What you can try:

    • Ensure that the NTFS permissions for the web.config file are correct and allow access to the Web server's machine account.
    • Check the event logs to see if any additional information was logged.
    • Verify the permissions for the DLL.
    • Install the .NET Extensibility feature if the request is mapped to a managed handler.
    • Create a tracing rule to track failed requests for this HTTP status code. For more information about creating a tracing rule for failed requests, click here.

More Information... This error means that there was a problem while processing the request. The request was received by the Web server, but during processing a fatal error occurred, causing the 500 error.

VISTA Business IIS7 just will not work

    Ok, now listen guys:

I am the one who started this thread and after 2 weeks ther had been no good simple solution to my problem. why is that? Maybe some of you guys are just geniuses or maybe this problem has no simple solution! I dshould not have to be a genius. this should jsut work. I'm gonna thow my pc and vista in the dumpster! I'm done with it all!

Do you all understand that this should never, ever be this complicated or technical! It should just work period.

I should never have to go into the registry error tracing and so forth and so on and do all this technical stuff just to get II7 to work.  Surley bill gates didn't think that joe schmoe could figure all of this out, when i'm an it guy and can't.

When i find out the simple answer that works and always works, then i will be satisfied. I have had my new vista pc for 3 months and i am yet to develop a classic ASP webiste on it becuase it doesn't run.

    This is freakin redicolous.

The one guy that said in an earlier post that he had the solution ofr me to impress my boss,, well

It was so technical, application pools, what the heck is that? why do i need to know about it

I just want to see this show up: "Hello world! this is an ASP page" when i broswe my localhost server.

I think maybe i will look for a third party free solution to this.

Surly there are other ASP webservers that will work with vista better than this.

It's obvious that most people in this thread are confused, frustrated, upset and P'OD!!!!

I am still looking for a simple answer, like go here and click such and such and II7 will work!

If i do not get an awser, here I am going to ditch the thing.

Who runs this forum anyway and why don' they have a simple solution? It's probably becuase they do not know either or beucase there is no simple solution. II7 should have worked when i booted up my PC for the first time! in iis6

can i go back to iis6 in Vista?

By the way, I forwared this message to both dell (which i have access to microsoft tech support) and microsoft directly, but they can't seem to get it to work either. Thant's interesting! That means it doesn't work easily!

    Thanks for your help!

    I'm done now!

Re: VISTA Business IIS7 just will not work

hey.. I totally sympathise with your frustration.. believe me.

I have just spent 5.5 hours out of a workday so I can test on localhost -   now I'm a freelancer.. so that means 5 hours of not getting paid .. and ticking off my clients because i'm not doing the work that I told them I'd do.

on the other hand.. after doing all of that -  was finally able to get my localhost site to work.. (none of the virtual directories work.. AT ALL)..   and you are right .. it is NOT easy.. it is NOT out of the box any more..  they have made it virtually impossible to continue to use classic ASP  - vista is only geared towards .net developers - they consider .asp to be legacy and so the support sucks and the help files are useless.

After I got my quick and simple file to work I then went to work on a real program.   I managed to get it down to a "normal" error - and I have no idea how I did it..  just by randomly clicking things until something worked... the "normal error" was a jet database error -  of course.. why would jet database work if you have to jump through hoops to get asp work?     I went to http://support.microsoft.com/?id=926939  and followed the advice to change permissions on my temp folder and also alter applicationhost.config  so that< processModel identityType="NetworkService" loadUserProfile="false" />  -  and voila..  I FINALLY got a desired response!  my page worked!

of course now.. it's all about figureing out virtual directories or applications or whatever the heck..  I'm still getting a 500 on those.. grrrrrr !!!

Anyway.. yes.. it's fucked.   yes.. it's stupid..  no.. it is not in anyway useful or friendly or even half way intelligable to anybody who wasn't involved in building the damn thing to begin with (i'm just a front-end developer..  I dont' know anything about most of this crap),   but we both had choices -  our choice was to use our old machine,  or faff about getting the new one to work with a server-side technology that microsoft and all but abandoned support for.   we chose the latter and paid the price for our foolishness.   Bill Gates sucks.

Re: VISTA Business IIS7 just will not work

Web server software is complicated.  You have multiple custom multi-tier applications running in the same process, invoking multiple other components and subsystems, all configured in unique ways.  At the same time, you expect exceptional security, performance, and reliability.  You cannot expect a system like this to always work out of the box.

What you can expect however is that there is sufficient support from the system to help diagnose problems and solve them.  If you are the person supporting the server, you are expected to know how to do basic error diagnostics (like for example get the actual error to post in the forums), and understand basic server concepts needed to resolve simple issues.  Dennis, if you are an IT guy, but you dont know what an IIS application pool is, or what 503 "Service Unavailable" error is (have you ever heard of the http 1.1 spec?), honestly, you have some learning to do.

ASP is supported and does work out of the box for most scenarios.  As you probably have come to expect, new releases of operating systems tend to tighten security a bit each time (otherwise, you would be coming back and screaming at us that we make insecure products), so you may run into some access issues as Lana has above with the temp directory and JET.

You can read Bill's post on common ASP issues here, it mentions this problem: http://blogs.iis.net/bills/archive/2007/05/21/tips-for-classic-asp-developers-on-iis7.aspx.  This problem is actually fixed in Windows Server 2008, because we decided that the security improvement was not worth the trouble that customers have reported (hey, thats what Beta releases are for).

I also recently posted a guide to doing diagnostics with IIS7, which is based on widely publicly available information: Troubleshoot IIS7 errors like a pro.  It discusses the steps necessary to enable detailed errors, and install failed request tracing if needed to help you diagnose the problem.

The bottom line is that with additional features, security, etc, comes a learning curve.  We are trying our best to help you wade through the first IIS7 days - IIS.NET is a dedicated website with forums, blog coverage, and tons of articles (when did we ever have anything like this before) to help you.  If we are missing some information, please tell us and we will do our best to cover it, but the "it should all just work" and "I refuse to go on google and read a single article" approach is not going to get anyone anywhere.

    Thanks,

    Mike

Re: VISTA Business IIS7 just will not work

just a quick point from me Mike..

I've been working on this for at least one to two hours a day for weeks now, each hour chewing away at the already meagre living I make.  I've been to every site on Google - the ones that seem to be the most potentially useful are sometimes written with so much techno-garble and so many assumptions made as to the competency of the reader in server-babble,  that I'm not surprised more people haven't just given up.  One of the problems with going to google is when you type in the error you're getting you then have to wade through so much irrelevant stuff that any answers to be found are hidden.

A company who sends me a lot of work gave up all together with vista and re-installed xp-pro on all their machines - and they've got real-live techy dudes and programming-guys.    When I told them I'd bought a box with vista on it.. they groaned and warned me of the peril i'd entered into.

until today -   I thought they were just being dramatic.  I spent over 6 hours just today.. and probably closer to 12 in total

Now that I've got local host default website working - virtual directories/applications still don't. But, if I want to pay my rent, i'll need to be content to copy my sites onto a memory key and test them on my old xp-pro box.  or replace the site in the default drive every time I need to amend and test.

I really don't think i'm being lazy or unreasonable when I say I wish things were just a bit more transparent in the old supporting classic asp department.  I admit to a low level of knowledge about all this stuff - i'm just a web designer,  who likes to use asp classic to make her customers happy...   but maybe I was just unlucky with all my endless errors?

    cheers.

    L.

Re: VISTA Business IIS7 just will not work

    Lana,

I feel your pain.  I do think that your experience is uncommon, or unlucky as you put it.  I also have a feeling that it has to do with upgrade (did you upgrade your machine from XP to Vista?), which introduces a lot of complexity in trying to translate an XP setup to a Vista setup, with not everything having a direct analog.

I would recommend that you start clean.
    - Install a clean Vista machine, install IIS, create your sites and applications (see Creating IIS7 sites, applications, and virtual directories).
    - Then, follow Bill's ASP tips if you have trouble: http://blogs.iis.net/bills/archive/2007/05/21/tips-for-classic-asp-developers-on-iis7.aspx
    - Specifically, for the temporary directory/JET access denied issue, the quickest thing to do is (From an command line prompt launched with "Run as Administrator"):

    > %windir%\system32\inetsrv\appcmd.exe set apppool "YourAppPool" /processModel.loadUserProfile:false

This should return you to the W2k3 behavior WRT this issue.

If you are still having trouble (ie. virtual directories "dont work") - please follow my troubleshooting guide here: Troubleshoot IIS7 errors like a pro to get to a detailed error, and post it here.  We will then take it from there.

I hope that this information helps you in a direct way, without sending you on another multi-hour goosechase.  If not, please let me know.

    Thanks,

    Mike

Re: VISTA Business IIS7 just will not work

     Hi mike,

I'll read and peruse that information in more detail tomorrow morning when my eyes can focus again.

But for now, just know - NO  it was not an upgrade.  my old dell inspiron 8200 is sitting in the corner of the flat happily running xp-pro and iis6 (or whatever is on there.. ) -  this sparkly new dell inspiron 6400,  I just got 2 months ago and it's the beast that came pre-installed with vista-business.

cheers for all your help by the way... in the waves of tearing out my hair (not easy with the length of mine!) in frustration - I can certainly come across a bit more terse then I really intend.

    Hi!

I also have a dell inspiron 6400, and I found all the XP drivers at Dell's website, so I could install XP-SP2 and later install the drivers, to finally got a wonderful and fully responsive IIS6!

I do not know what was in the mind of Micro$oft when designing Vista, for God sake! But certainly it was not making a "popular" operating system!

    Have a great day!

    Adrian,

Just to make sure you are aware of this, XP SP2 has IIS5.1, not IIS6.

    Thanks,

Re: i can't browde local host with VISTA Ultimate IIS7

Looks like i have the same issue as Stratus42.

I am studing ASP at school and all my scripts work fine on the computers at school although when i get home some (not all) do not work on my computer and i get the following message:

An error occurred on the server when processing the URL. Please contact the system administrator

I have followed the second link above and have tested that i do now get detailed error messages, however when i run certain scripts i only get the message above.

It seems to be only happening on the ASP scripts where i am linking to a database (we have just started doing this - all my other ASP Scripts are working fine on my computer at home).  And all scripts are working fine at school, so i know they all should be working at home too.

School has XP and IIS 6.0

Any thoughts on why they will not work on my home computer running Vista Ultimate and IIS 7.0 ??

Any help would be most appreciated.

    Cheers

    Michelle
