The remote server returned an error: (401) Unauthorized.

I tried remote management; dl'ed the Web Manager, installed on Vista. Enabled and started the Management Service. Connected. It told me about the certificate. And then I got the nice unauthorized dialog box. However, I tried to login using the Administrator acoount (via Specifiy credentials on the second step). I was under the impression that the Administrator is granted server-level remote administration by default? Or did I miss a step?

I think I'm starting to "see things".

    What did I do?

Go to the Default Web Site, IIS Manager Permissions. Added the Windows user account Administrator. Went to the remote console, keyed in the management service url and Web site name, and then tried to connect. It gives me a 401 when I DO NOT place a checkmark into the IIS Manager credentials checkbox, however, when I do it lets me in.

I thought this is only for non-Windows IIS Mgr credentials? I am definitely starting to go entirely cross eyed.

Only Windows Administrator is able to connect remotely to 'server' level.

Re: The remote server returned an error: (401) Unauthorized.

    I have tried this..

    1. IIS Manager users,
    2. added users
    3. assigned users to a particular site
    4. tried to log in remotely gut still got the same error. not no one else was connected remotely.

how can i get users to connect remotely?

    thanks,
    Jules

You should use the "Connect to a Site" option and specify the site you have granted them permissions.
