    I tried changing this setting:

    "IP Address All Unassigned"

    to both 127.0.0.1 & 192.168.1.111.

No difference - still won't resolve localhost

    Thanks for the try!

Have a look at this article, maybe it helps:

    http://forums.microsoft.com/technet/showpost.aspx?postid=755630&siteid=17

I had the same problem with WinXP SP2 and Linksys WRT54GS router and for me the solution that worked for now was to uninstall IPv6 with command "ipv6 uninstall" at command prompt.

    Hi -

You say you had the "same problem".  Do you mean the same problem as mine (not being able to resolve localhost) or the same Vista problem that the MS forum thread talks about?  If the same problem as mine - you are saying that you couldn't resolve localhost, but when you uninstalled IPv6 you then could?

I just want to make sure before I do something quite so drastic as uninstalling IPv6.

    I am on XP SP2 & a  WRT54GS router, though.

    Thanks!

Re: Cannot access localhost when connected to router

    Hi!

Same problem as yours - the OS didn't resolve localhost. After uninstallig IPv6 "localhost" resolves. The problem actually occured when the machine was connected to the router and also when the machine was conneted to domain server, so in my case I suspect the problem is not the router, but maybe programs I have have tried out and later uninstalled like Norton Antivirus or NOD32 or maybe Spybot Search&Destroy Immunity feature or various proxies. I think reinstalling the WinXP would give the answer to that, but this not a good option at this time, so I'm stuck to using IPv4 right now (no bad stuff has happened out of this by the way).

By the way, after uninstalling the IPv6, connecting to "localhost" works as expected, but connecting to "127.0.0.1" the web server asks for password and when the right password is given, returns 500 Internal server error. I have yet to find the answer for that. Anyway, installing IPv6 was as simple as to add TCP/IP v6 protocol to network connection through Properties dialog, so I feel "drastic" is a bit drastic ;)

Wow - that was it!  "ipv6 uninstall" run from the command line did it.

Interestingly enough, MS labels IPv6 on XP as "beta software".  Guess it still needs work, eh?

However, I must add that 127.0.0.1 works interchangeably with localhost for me.  IOW - the way it's supposed to...

Previously I had tried stopping & disabling the IPv6 service, but that did not do it.  So - anyone watching this thread, please take notice that you have to actually uninstall it, not just stop & disable!

Thank you all for your responses & Happy New Year to everyone!

    Best Regards,

Wow x 2 !  I got both v4 and v6 in my vista box as well, but I don't have the above mentioned issue :)
