Failed to install SQL Server Express 2008 with Service Pack 1

I tried to install SQL Server Express 2008 with Service Pack 1 on windows xp but the return code is 5 not metioned in previous posts. Here are two lines in the file "webpi.txt":

DownloadManager Information: 0 : Install exit code for product 'SQL Server Express 2008 with Service Pack 1' is 5
DownloadManager Error: 0 : Install return code for product 'SQL Server Express 2008 with Service Pack 1' is Failure

Any help will be greatly appreciated.

We've recently upgraded to IIS7.5 running on a Windows Server 2008 R2x64 The Installation - an upgrade from Windows 2003 R2 x64 went well without any noticable exceptions. However, when we attempt to open the Worker Processes in WebServer IIS7.5 this error message appears and MMC closes..

"An unhandled win32 exception occurred in mmc.exe[5244]"

The Active Application Pools - We have two pools - both using .Net Framework 2.50727 and Managed Pipeline - Classic

WCF - Enable compression for XML / JSON

Hi once again,

I have come to my attention that ySlow says my xml responses are not compressed within my restful WCF service.

Seen loads of info on creating compression channels etc, but figured IIS7 where the WCF service is hosted should be able to do it by itself via dynamic compression and probably a mimetype.

Reading other forums some say it can be done, some say it can't, so I'm seeking The One true answer (besides 42 ofcourse) to this question.

What I do know, or think I know atleast:

Content-Type: application/xml; charset=utf-8
Server: Microsoft-IIS/7.0

applicationHost.config seems to be the place to setup this kind of stuff, would rather like it in my web.config tough.

 I got the section

            <dynamicTypes>
                <add mimeType="application/xml" enabled="true" />  added by me
                <add mimeType="text/*" enabled="true" />
                <add mimeType="message/*" enabled="true" />
                <add mimeType="application/x-javascript" enabled="true" />

But does no good, in the website that hosts the WCF the following is in the web.config

<urlCompression doDynamicCompression="true" />

 Seen arguments saying it should be

<urlCompression doDynamicCompression="false" dynamicCompressionBeforeCache="true" />

but neither work for me.

So I'm really hoping someone got a clear as day solution to enable my responses to accept compression, maybe even enabling deflate aswell as gzip.

32 bit 3rd party dll won't work on 64 bit OS

We are moving one of our sites to a Windows Server 2008 64 bit machine from a Windows Server2003 32 bit machine. I set the app pool to run in 32 bit mode but the site still doesn't work. We are dependent on a 3rd party dll that seems to be causing the problem. If I remove this 3rd party dll from the bin directory of the site, the site will load and present the login form. Though use of the site would be crippled without this dll. Is there a setting/configuration that i'm missing to resolve this problem?

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

First of all, thanks for all the great walkthroughs on this site. I've gotten a reverse proxy going very quickly.

The only issue remaining for me is that links to files, like PDFs or DOCs, aren't rewritten. I tried doing something similar to the "^text/html" outbound rewrite rule here:

using preconditions for "^application/msword" and "^application/pdf", but it's not working. Can anyone point me at some documentation for rewriting links inside responses for files? Thanks in advance for any help.

I am running Wordpress 3.8.5 on IIs 7 Windows 2008 Server, PHP (latest stable), Mysql (latest stable). I can get everything to work properly except the following.. When my wordpress gallery page creates a new folder, permissions are not getting inherited to that folder until I literally adjust permissions by hand on my server locally. (I have a feeling it is not just my wordpress as I have several installed and all share the same issue) I am sure there is just a setting that I am missing somewhere.. I have set the permissions on the parent folder (wwwroot) for IIS_IUSER and most of the other accounts NETSERVICE, LOCALSERVICE, etc.. For some reason CHILD folders created by the website are not writable.. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I don’t believe I need to have a Host A record added by our ISP.

How to configure IIS 7 to communicate with an external Certificate Authority

Hi,

I have a web application that require a user certificate. I've hosted this application in ms server 2008. In the other hand, i have my own certificate authority that is setted up in an other server 2008.

From II7 of my web application server, I've create a certificate request. I've copyied the request to my certificate authority server, and then, i've issued the web app certificate.

The users can get their "user certificate" from CA server.

The problem is: My IIS 7 cannot verify the user certificate if it's valid or not! I'm wondering how can I configure my Web App Server (IIS 7) to communicate the my CA Server to validate the user certificate??

Possible bug: Unable to set the "debug" attribute in the "compilation" section in web.config

There seems to be a bug in the APPCMD tool that prevents me from changing the "debug" attribute of the "compilation" section of a web.config file. I can change other attributes such as "batch" and "defaultLanguage" but the "debug" attribute refuses to change.

For example, the following commands work just fine:

appcmd set config "MySite" -section:compilation /batch:false
appcmd set config "MySite" -section:compilation /defaultLanguage:"c#"

But changing the "debug" attribute doesn't:

appcmd set config "MySite" -section:compilation /debug:false
appcmd set config "MySite" -section:compilation /debug:true

I've even tried more explicit section paths:

appcmd set config "MySite" -section:system.web/compilation /debug:false
appcmd set config "MySite" -section:system.web/compilation /debug:true

I have confirmed this to be the case on IIS7.0 running on Windows 2008 Standard Edition SP2 and IIS 7.5 running on Windows 7 Ultimate Edition.

I also checked the schema file for ASP.NET (C:\Windows\System32\inetsrv\config\schema\ASPNET_schema.xml) and there is no restriction on this setting.

Need to reference a file OUTSIDE my current virtual directory - how?

So my site is:

Default Webssite -> MainCompanyPortal -> MySite

I need to reference a file in Default Webssite -> MainCompanyPortal\SomeFile.aspx

How can I reference that from inside ->MySite?

Say I want to make a URL link to it in ASP.NET, but I don't have a full www.mycompany.com/SomeFile.aspx as the domain could change, but I know it will always be in the higher directory.

Would I make a NEW cirtual directory inside my current site and point that up a level? That seems sort of odd doesn't it?

What about a more direct reference? Can I call another virtual directory by name?

need help with URL forwarding IIS7

first i would say that i am an beginner with IIS7 & win7 and i have search the forum but dont found the right answer.

Normally i think is an simple problem but i can not solve to 100% alone, here it is:

I have 3 PC´s and want use 2 as IIS servers with different web sites which can be viewed from outside with different web addresses, the third pc i think is for routing the requests.

I have one static IP from outside where everyone can put in the domain name as sample myfirstsite.com this and the other sites i put on default web site on win7 and IIS7.

For routing this site i have made 2 Server farms, the first Farm1 with internal IP 192.123.123.1 and an second Farm2 with internal IP 192.123.123.2

For Farm1 i have simple rewrite rules with * wildcards and when i put in any web address i come on server1 without problems (sure all web addresses i have on routing server in default web site and on the other servers as seperate web site)

Also for Farm2 i have made rewrite rules ARR_Farm2_loadbalance with Conditions Input {HTTP_HOST} -> Matches the Pattern and www.mysite2.com as Pattern and Action route to server Farm "Scheme" http:// Farm2 "Path" /{R:0}

So far so good, when i put in www.mysite2.com i come to right IP 192.123.123.2 but if i try to put in direct Link as sample www.mysite2.com/myfile.aspx?name=myname&password=mypass i come to main page only.

Have any one an idea what i doing wrong? or what i can made better?

Hello All, I have a C-Sharp dll that has been working on server 2008 32 bit machine just fine. But on a Server 2008 R2 64 bit machine the dll will fail with failed to create object. Through several days of troubleshooting I'm down to this. I can regasm the dll using the dot net frame for 32 bit and using Component Services to view it, I see that it has been registered in 32 bit registry. But it still fails creating object.

I install VS2008 on the server selected the rebuild solution with register for com interop enabled. The dll works fine now. I quit vs2008 and the dll is still registered and working correctly. I unregister it and test it fails as I expect.

Now I manually register the dll from the same location as soruce successfully. I run the app and recieve the failed to create object again.

My question is what is the IDE do to register the dll as com interop behind the scenes. What am I missing in my manual process to register this on 64 bit bit machine as a 32 bit.

All help or suggestion will be appreciated.

Migrating from Windows Media Services to IIS Smooth Streaming

Hi I would like to know if there is any documentation about migrating media delivery from Windows Media Services (WMS) to IIS Smooth streaming? Today I serve my content using WMS. My content is usually just one bitrate wmv file in Windows Media 9 format (video and audio) in an asf container. I also have another version of my content for mobile devices such as the iPhone. This is a lower resolution version of the same file encoded using AVC1(h264)/ACC in an mp4 container. My question are: Do I need to re-encode my content for smooth streaming or can I somehow generate the Manifest files according to the already existing keyframes in my media files? Also, would it be possible to offer two bitrates in different formats? The idea is to use the lower resolution (and lower bitrate) format (iPhone version) together with the higher bitrate version of the video. Clients seeking around or experiencing bandwith problems could therefore start by playing the lower bitrate and then switch to the higher bitrate version. Furthermore, could I "smooth stream" the lower bitrate version directly to the iPhone as well (as shown (or almost shown..) in ScottGu's keynote at PDC09)?

I installed IIS 7.5 on my Windows 7 machine last night for development work.

Basically, I want to run a few sites on different ports - I do not want to have to mess around with hosts files or DNS entries, I simply want to have a few sites active just on localhost and switch between them by port numbers... Then change the home folder when I am done to another project.

Everything works fine locally. I then went from another machine and it did not work. I enabled the "World Wide Web Services (HTTP Traffic-In)" rule under Inbound Rules, and it works without problems for Port 80, however, none of the additional sites work.

I have created additional rules and that works, however I feel like I have left the machine open as it just doesn't feel right!

Why is the default rule targeted to port 80 and not the IIS process/service itself?

Why does it have "Apply to all programs and services" and not just the "World Wide Web Publishing Service / W3SVC"?

Is there a better way of doing this? - I don't want to have to create a new rule each time I want to enable/disable a site and I do not remember having to do this on XP which was the last time I used IIS on a development machine where I used multiple ports (but I could be wrong).

in iis 7 i'm getting the error "?" not allowed... any workaround??

(facing lot of issues from 32 bit to windows server 2008 64 bit because of ajax and other dll's..any good article...)

IIS7/php striping back slashes

We have an installation of IIS7 running php 5.2.11 that is automatically striping black slashes out of text box input fields. This is causing several issues as we are running Moodle on the server and some of the text fields need to have back slashes, if we put two backslashes in the first one acts as an escape character for the other but when we go back to edit the text again the double slashes have been reduced down to one, if the tutor then saves the text we end up no slashes.

If we run the same moodle code on the same server but use Apache as the web server the slashes do not get removed.

Is this a feature of IIS7 that can be turned off?

ARR and smooth streaming

Hi there, I had configured a small ARR implementation with the following configuration: 1 ARR and 2 webservers doing round robin balancing.

Everything worked well (check it at http://190.210.77.135/wordpress) but when I tried to use ARR in order to load balancing and caching a smooth streaming video the ARR server is sending a 404 error (page not found) when trying to access to the smooth streaming services url

SSL problem using 3rd party root certificate

We are using DoD and ECA certificates on one of our IIS 6.0 websites. We are having a problem with IIS not providing the ECA Root CA 2 (2048 bit) certificate in the list of acceptable client certificate CA names when it is negotiating an SSL session. We have 'Require client certificates' enabled and we are not using a CTL. The DoD Root CA 2 certificate works just fine. Both certs are installed in the 'Trusted Root Certificate Authorities' store. I'm pulling my hair out on this. Has anyone any idea what the problem and how to resolve it?

Server2008 R2 64 bit and Classic Asp

Up front the code that is of concern works on Server 2008 32 bit machine just fine but not on the 64 bit machine. The dll that is giving me errors is written in C#. I'm trying to call from a Classic asp page. I wrote a simple page to call the coomponent and it fails trying to create the object. I view the component in component services and it shows as being registered as 32 bt. I can call my VB6 dll from classic asp with out any errors. Does anyone have any suggestions.
